The easiest way to wear a maxi dress or skirt is either casually during the summer (a jersey version, black or striped) or to a black-tie event (silk, satin, taffeta with sequins and spangles galore). But the coolest girls I know don't do either. Instead of banishing long hemlines to beaches and ballrooms, they wear the silhouette the same as pants—to work, a coffee shop, the movies.

I'm most in awe of these floor-grazing looks during the fall and winter, because that's when most people aren't wearing them.
