Derek Lam Discusses the Rio de Janeiro Inspiration Behind His Upcoming Kohl's Capsule
Derek Lam is known and loved for his sleek, streamlined aesthetic—but for his Spring 2013 capsule for Kohl's, he swapped the architectural for the earthy. Like the department store's first DesigNation collaborator, Narciso Rodriguez, Derek also drew inspiration from an exotic destination: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
"It's such a sensual city, but it's also very personal to me—I've been a few times," the designer explained at today's press preview. "I thought it was a perfect modern city to get inspired by. It's more sensual than cerebral, so it sort of pushed me in a new design direction."
While editors and bloggers were strictly forbidden from sharing photographs or detailed descriptions of the clothing itself, Derek did fill us in on how he selected a color palette for the collection. "It was all about the idea of warm, sensual brights," he said of the mix of greens, yellows and aquamarines. "I obviously started with the ocean, and then looked to the jungle for those greens. I think we've seen so much pastel lately, so it was nice to do something earthy, which is very much in the spirit of Rio."
Lam fans will be able to get their hands on Derek's under-$100 wares, which the man himself calls "luxurious without being pretentious," next April. Until then, watch this space for images.
