Kanye West, SJP and Major Models Celebrated the Launch of Maison Martin Margiela for H&M

For all his well-deserved accolades and cult following, Martin Margiela's designs can be famously tricky to wear—unless you possess endless legs and a slim, mannequin-like frame, of course. So it came as little surprise that at last night's launch party for Maison Martin Margiela's collection for H&M, countless catwalkers turned up in the enigmatic Belgian brand's wares (both from the primary line as well as the forthcoming high street capsule). We particularly liked Maryna Linchuk's five-sizes-too-big jeans, Kasia Struss' Lucite-wedge-heeled boots and Joan Smalls' crazily baggy shorts (or was that a skort?).

But plenty of actresses also accepted the challenge of slipping into Margiela's artier creations—like Selma Blair, who chose a multi-sleeved, asymmetrical dress. She finished her look with a braided updo and bold red lip. "It looks like I did it myself," she told me of the complicated-looking hairstyle, "but I had my friend Kevin do it. I wanted something kinda Frida Kahlo, kinda romantic, kinda ridiculous and kinda easy. It's just two braids pinned up!" A longtime fan of Margiela's designs, Selma didn't hold back when discussing the clothes: "The craftsmanship is obviously so incredible, and it's so amusing! He took deconstruction to a whole new level. I'm so truly happy whenever I put on one of his pieces." Even those semi-dangerous-looking clear wedge pumps? "I highly recommend them—they're totally comfortable," she promised me when I confessed I was lusting after the exact same pair.

One star who's used to being comfortable wearing very little, of course, is Victoria's Secret Angel Doutzen Kroes—who turned up in a remarkably comfy-looking tee, leather moto jacket and harem pants combo. And while she's accustomed to modeling lingerie—commonly considered the sexiest clothing on the planet—Doutzen told me she finds Margiela's androgynous-chic, oversized silhouettes just as alluring. "A woman can look really sexy in Margiela," she insisted. "With Victoria's Secret, you know, everything's out there. I think it's really sexy when you don't know what's underneath, when things are more covered." So what was the first Margiela-designed piece she ever owned? "It was a simple black sweater with a V-neck. Simple, sexy."

After the red carpet wrapped up, I headed upstairs to the ninth floor of 5 Beekman Street, the abandoned building that served as the event's venue, where guests were given the opportunity to shop Maison Martin Margiela for H&M well in advance of its in-store launch date. There were performance art installations everywhere you looked—here, dancers making "sand canvases." There, a makeshift graveyard of lit-up white oxford shirts. Around the 10 pm mark, tons of silver confetti rained down on the partygoers. Seems even minimalists have a festive streak.

Click through to peep the evening's arrivals, which included Julianne Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker—and, yes, Kanye West. And in case you were wondering, that jacket is Margiela. For H&M, to be precise.
