Alexander Wang Is Replacing Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga

After nearly a month's worth of hand-wringing and conflicting, confusing reports, it appears that Nicolas Ghesquière's successor at Balenciaga has finally been chosen. According to WWD, we can expect luxury firm PPR's official announcement of Alexander Wang's appointment at the French fashion house next week. Today will be Ghesquière's last day as Balenciaga's creative director.

While neither Balenciaga nor Alexander Wang officials have commented, WWD's confirmation of the hire comes hot on the heels of Cathy Horyn's recent claim that Wang was the front-runner for the prestigious position, which ran in the New York Times just two days ago.

PPR's choice of the young New York-based design talent is especially interesting because his signature aesthetic—that is, model-off-duty casual—stands in stark contrast to the futuristic, couture-like look we've come to associate with Ghesquière's Balenciaga over the course of his 15-year tenure. Still, as WWD points out, Wang's demonstrated mastery in accessories—handbags are a key category at Balenciaga—and obviously has business savvy and commercial appeal on his side.

Do you think Alex Wang is the right choice for Balenciaga? More importantly, does this mean he and Kristen Stewart (the face of the house's Florabotanica fragrance) are about to log some serious BFF hang time? Sound off below!
