Dress Like Holiday Barbie This Season

With the holiday season upon us, holiday dressing – that is, for all those parties and open houses and cocktail hours you have to go to – is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. And while it can be a time when dressing up seems to get almost mechanical – put on sequin dress, repeat ad nauseam – it’s also a time when you can get creative and have a lot of fun. This season, I’d like to take my inspiration from a holiday mainstay of my childhood: the Holiday Barbie. Even though I never had an actual holiday Barbie, (surprising, given that I had almost every other Barbie thing possible) the 1996 version—available on eBay for a mere $40—lives on in my house in ornament form, spreading fabulous holiday inspiration from her perch in the boughs of the tree.

The Holiday Barbie look is all-out glam – metallics, statement jewels, sumptuous furs, rich colors and of course festive makeup. Which means channeling Barbie is an exercise in excess. That common wisdom to take one thing off before you leave the house? Barbie urges you to put one more thing on. This is the time to throw all your fabulous items on at the same time and wear them with holiday cheer. You might be asking yourself, “Isn’t that kind of tacky?” Maybe, but just remember: Barbie wouldn't blink an eye.
