Designer Vivienne Westwood: Michelle Obama's Style Is 'Dreadful'

As Michelle Obama prepared for the January 2013 inaugural ball, brands around the world clamored to get involved. Dozens of special sketches from the hands of Karl Lagerfeld, Tommy Hilfiger and more were submitted and roughly 15 custom garments produced, all in hopes of catching the First Lady's eye. Her final choice, a sweeping red Jason Wu gown, received high praise from the fashion community, much like everything she has and continues to wear. But it seems even M'Obama can't please everyone, especially not British designer Vivienne Westwood.
Asked about FLOTUS in a recent interview with The New York Times, the 71 year old, reknowned for her punk style, said, "Don’t talk about her. It’s dreadful what she wears." Further pressed she explained, "I don’t want to talk about it. Really, I can’t. She’s a very nice looking lady, but it’s a nonstarter regarding clothes that suit her. Jackie Kennedy was a different matter altogether. It just has to suit her and be something that makes a human being more glamorous. That’s what fashion is there for. It’s there to help, not just to make you look more conservative."
Now all you First Lady fans, before you get too wound up over the Ms. Westwood's strongly worded criticism, know that she also blasted Kate Middleton ("Don’t buy so many clothes."), American journalists ("Mostly, I think they are rubbish.") and fashion in general ("[It's] become so whatever."). So it's not so much that she has a personal vendetta against M'Obama than lots contrarian opinions in general. Do you agree with any of them?
