Nicola Formichetti Is Leaving Mugler

Back in 2011, iconic French label Mugler named Nicola Formichetti—at the time best known for his work styling the incomparable Lady Gaga—its new creative director. Over the two years that followed, Formichetti dramatically expanded Mugler's fashion cred, first tapping Mother Monster to walk in Mugler's Fall 2011 womenswear show and later launching handbags for the house, all the while increasing the house's social media presence.

Now, according to WWD, Formichetti and Mugler are parting ways. “Nicola has accomplished our original mission of bringing his energy to the brand,” Mugler's director general Joel Palix said in a statement. “With his talent for communication and understanding modern imagery and design, Nicola has been instrumental in attracting a new audience which is undeniably crucial for the future strategy of the house. He will be a historical part of the Mugler legacy and known as the force that catapulted us forward.”

No immediate successor has been named, but according to the trade paper, Mugler will soon reveal a new brand strategy that focuses on the house's fragrance division. In the meantime, we're wondering whether the Haus of Gaga's main man decided to exit Mugler to focus on his own label—remember, that one announced last May? Plus, in addition to Gaga, Formichetti now works regularly with Kim Kardashian—and with two of pop culture's most talked-about ladies on his team, we doubt the super-stylist's career will suffer in the aftermath of this particular split.
