Mindy Kaling on Love, Dating and Shopping

Best known for her bubbly role as Kelly Kapoor on The Office, actress-comedian-writer-director-producer Mindy Kaling boasts the quintessential Hollywood job title—and blockbuster ambition to match. Her latest endeavor is co-starring in the upcoming romantic comedy The Five Year Engagement, with Emily Blunt and Jason Segel. Kaling plays an unabashed hard-partying graduate student with a smart-ass sense of humor, who doles out the movie's best (and not surprisingly, snarkiest) zingers. We chatted with the funny girl at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills and, since the movie was about relationship hiccups, we asked her to dish on everything from her worst date ever to her dream wedding dress-and everything in between, like her epic shoe collection (heels literally line the rooms in her house!). Get ready to chuckle.

Lucky: What's the craziest thing you've ever done to save a relationship?

Mindy Kaling: I've done that typical girl thing where I've stayed in a relationship six months too long. But the craziest thing I guess would be trying to appear more domestic than I actually am. Which is a huge disaster, and it's not something that comes very natural for me. So, like say if I print out a recipe from the Food Network website and it says it's going to take 30 minutes to prepare and 30 minutes to cook, it always takes me like three hours longer, because I have to start from crazy scratch, like learning how to use my oven. So those things tend not to work out so great.

What is your go-to date night outfit?

I've scaled back in the past year, because my personality tends to be more is more—like quantity is better than quality. I've always just known that about myself since I was like five-years-old. But in the past year and a half, I've found that when I look at photos of myself and when I feel the most sexy or pretty is when I'm simply wearing a polka dotted t-shirt with a pair of flattering jeans and colorful heels. So that's my new favorite thing to wear.

What was your worst date ever?

The worst date is the one where you don't know if it's even a date. The guy is like, let's hang out, and it's this nebulous thing, where you go to a matinee and are getting dinner afterwards but you go Dutch. And you were like, is this a date? I've had many of those in my twenties. So I pretty much think if a guy is willing to say, "Do want to go on a date?," and actually uses those words, it's probably not going to be that bad, because you know what the score is.

You have a blog called "Things I Bought that I Love." Tell us your most recent acquisition.

I'm really crazy about Tom Ford makeup right now. Usually makeup is not something I shop for because it's pretty expensive, but it's the kind of makeup that is so worth it. My favorite lipstick from the line is called Black Orchid. It is the new hot date, purple-y lipstick that I wear. I'm also kind of obsessed with Alexis Bittar's drop earrings. They're sparkly and a little bit ethereal.

We know you collect shoes. What's your latest favorite?

I have a pair of Alexandre Birman yellow snake skin print heels. Colorful heels is, I feel, the accessory du jour. I can wear a gray Splendid T-shirt and a pair of J Brands and then just throw on yellow shoes and everyone thinks I'm more sexy.

Who is your best shopping partner?

My mother, who passed away two months ago, was my favorite. To no one in LA am I a fashion expert, but to my mom I always was, and that was really rewarding to me.

Have you ever been a bridesmaid?

I was just a bridesmaid for the first time at my best friend's wedding in Hawaii a couple months ago. It was extremely fun, but I stressed myself out over the dress. My friend made it easy for us by telling us we just had to wear a cocktail-length, coral-colored dress. But coral is a really difficult color to find because there are some corals that are too red and some that are too salmon-y. So the coral thing was tricky.

How do you picture your wedding?

You know how everyone always says they want a small simple wedding? I'm not like that at all. I want a huge wedding with all my friends in a place like South Africa and I want to wear a long-sleeved short Alice Temperley dress. I want it to be girly but cool and short, and a little ethereal.
