Rock Star Style Audit: Nikki Monninger of Silversun Pickups

photo[9].jpg
WHO: Nikki Monninger, bassist, Silversun Pickups

ONSTAGE UNIFORM: I usually wear a dress with Mary Janes. I'm loving the new Marc by Marc Jacobs dresses for fall. My favorite shoes are my black patent leather Chloe from several seasons ago. And, of course, my Gibson thunderbird and skullphone guitar strap.

OFFSTAGE UNIFORM: My favorite Freedom of Choice jeans, with a button-up top and Mary Janes..Always Mary Janes.

WHO EPITOMIZES ROCK 'N ROLL STYLE: Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore are the perfect rock and roll couple. Liam and Noel Gallagher are a close second. I love Liam's new clothing line, Pretty Green. I hope he develops a girls line too.

FAVORITE ITEM IN CLOSET: The "Veronica Lake" dress from Matruska Construction. I have one in almost every color. I throw it in my suitcase and when I take it out it's wrinkle-free--so important for traveling all of the time.

FAVORITE BRANDS/DESIGNERS: Marc Jacobs, Matrushka Construction, See by Chloe, Freedom of Choice, Ben Sherman, A.P.C.

Style Diary: Ra Ra Riot at Lollapalooza

2009_08_rarariot.jpg
Rebecca is wearing a Forever 21 skirt, a belt bought at a market in Shanghai, Aldo shoes, a Topshop owl ring and Forever 21 fish pendant necklace.  Alexandra is wearing a Rugby by Ralph Lauren dress, Introspection Boutique belt, shoes from H&M and vintage accessories.

Lucky's all about festival style this summer, and we are tracking the fashionable ladies of indie band Ra Ra Riot (violinist Rebecca Zeller, at left, and cellist Alexandra Lawn, at right) across the country to get the details of their inspiring tour outfits. We've already seen their choices for All Points West in Jersey, City Hall Plaza in Boston, an off-duty practice session in upstate New York, and what they wore when they opened for the Killers in Elizabeth, Indiana. Today we have photos of their cute looks at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Lollapalooza Awards, Best Overall Style: Lykke Li. For SURE.

IMG_1076.JPG
Swedish singer (and buzzed-about-all-weekend Lollapalooza performer) Lykke Li makes lovely, breathy-dance-y music. She also has killer, sort of Alexander Wang-meets-Kate Moss style. Her outfit for our interview was even better up close: the blazer looked part silk, the black slips were chiffon-y and floaty and layered, and the jewelry and smoky makeup were perfect. My favorite was the cut-off, shredded black tights she wore like little shorts (photo below) peeking out from just below her hem. Totally copying that. Read on for Lykke's style advice...

Lollapalooza Style: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs t-shirt design contest

poster-1.jpg
Once again I found myself at a festival with Ms. Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs over the weekend--no photo-stalking this time, though. Now THIS is cool: the band is looking for "ART STARS" to design a new t-shirt for them (the deadline is July 22, P.S.). The winner will have their print sold on tour and online. FUN.

If I were to design a shirt for this band, I'd skip trying to win on artistic merit (due to my vacuous aesthetic imagination) and instead go straight for controversy, i.e. turning an old Iron Maiden t-shirt into one that reads like this: "BRING YOUR DAUGHTER...TO THE SLAUGHTER: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs!" Or you could just take a marker and scrawl "THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS!" across any of those "sad Kurt" shirts popular with middle-schoolers of the mid-nineties--you go straight to hell*, but it's Karen O., man! She's weird! And you know SHE'S picking this winner, not the dudes. Please. (Less controversial idea: "THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS" on the front, "I AM QUEENS BOULEVARD" on the back. So uncool it's cool?)

What's YOUR irreverent shirt idea?

Lollapalooza Awards: Most Obsession-Worthy Haircut

IMG_1064.JPG Look how this girl's hair changes with the wind! It looks different and amazing in each of these three quick shots, which were taken, like, split seconds apart from one another. THAT, my friends, is a GOOD haircut. A++++.

Lollapalooza Awards: The "Chuck Bass Goes to Glastonbury" Honorary Man-Prize

photo-3.jpg Usually we don't cover guys' style, but I do love when they make an effort and I LOVED this dude, who was totally sweet. What made his outfit extra-special was that he was in a pack of total jerk-y drunk jock types, too. They weren't dressed cool at all--I can't remember specifics, so just picture them all in this "Co-ed Naked ______" shirts and calmly arguing that they're better at math than you and you get the idea. One of them demanded a free beer cozy in exchange for taking his friend's photo. It didn't even make sense.

Actually, this "Co-Ed Naked Web Designing" shirt is so lame that it's sort of awesome. I would sew an old Comme de Garcons label in it and insist to the grave that it was authentic and that I got it in at a CDG pop-up store by the entrance to the "Great Expectations Boat Ride" inside DickensWorld theme park on my last trip to Chatham, Kent UK.

Yup, this is definitely why I don't have more friends.

Lollapalooza Awards: Best On-Purpose Accessories-Overload

IMG_1079.JPG
This is Kesha. Her song with Flo Rida, "Right Round", is on the radio approximately every 5 seconds. It is a hugely saucy reincarnation of the '80s classic "You Spin Me Right Round (Like a Record)". You've heard it.

ANYWAY. She looks amazing with tons of necklaces and bangles on, which just goes to show that as far as rock 'n roll festival glamour goes, more is more. It works. She had gold glitter in her hair, too. Love.

Am I wrong? Is she OVERkilling it-overkilling it? And did I just completely lose you with the phrase "OVERkilling it-overkilling it"? Discuss.
