Resort 2012 Trend: Surf's Up

Whether it was a wetsuit-inspired mini dress at Michael Kors (made out of not-terribly-waterproof cashmere), or body-con neoprene leggings at McQ, there was a serious surf vibe in the air. Our favorite: The vibrant cerulean dress at Derek Lam that had us picturing Kate Bosworth in all her “Blue Crush” amazingness. It’s the kind of look that’ll have people wondering if we’re hitting the beach--or the club.

Resort 2012 Trend: White Heat

Nothing says “resort” more than head-to-toe white; it just communicates the idea that we’re going to some wonderful sunshiney vacation place where there is no such thing as grime. That place might just be in our heads, but the designers were thinking along those lines too; collections were full of blinding white looks, from a sleek pantsuit at Alexander Wang to a flirty frock at Louis Vuitton. Forget reality (and let the dry cleaner deal with it later).

Resort 2012 Trend: Garden Party

Florals are always popular in resort collections. Makes sense; by the time these collections roll around, we’re ready to say buh-bye to black, navy, camel and grey and all the other dark winter staples we’ve been wearing since the first hint of cold, and eager to embrace some vivid, spring-y prints. But this batch of florals was more than just the usual scattering of blossoms; they were super-saturated, as though designers wanted to see just how many flowers they could pack onto a single garment! Not that we’re complaining; we love a good print, and in the hands of a master, more is more. Our favorites were at Celine, where Phoebe Philo deftly paired a button down with a slim pant and stark white pumps to dazzling effect.

Resort 2012 Trend: Bright is Right

We are having a major crush on neon right now, so imagine how exciting it was to see so many of our love objects popping up in the resort collections. Bright colors are a visual trigger to thinking about the beach (“hot pink? Beach!” “Bright yellow? Beach!”) and they do wonders for every neutral (but particularly navy or khaki). In the collections, the sartorially adventurous went bright-on-bright, and that really stopped the show. We DIED for the cropped fuchsia jacket paired with a tangerine skirt at Giambattista Valli. For a more subtle take on neon, go for the white dress at ALC—ethereal and flirty with just a hint of fluoro yellow hidden on the inside hem. Dazzling.

Bird by Juicy Couture's Holiday Collection Couldn't Be Any Further From Velour Sweats

If you still only associate the Juicy label with a track suit (admittedly, it's an image seared into our collective conscience), it's time to reacquaint yourself with the brand and all of its diffusion collections that fall far outside the purview of velour sweats. With the angelically glamorous Erin Fetherston installed as the creative consultant and its ongoing, contemporary-priced Bird collection, Juicy is quietly reworking its image and offering a range of clothing and accessories for those who want more than plushy loungewear.
