It started back in October when my friend Sam first tipped me off to James Perse's Casual Tee. She raved about it, I bought it, and it is truly the best fitting and feeling T-shirt ever. One led to two, then three, then, um, four. They were so good I just couldn't help myself. I thought I could stop there, and then last week our senior fashion editor, Laurie Trott, came into the office wearing the heather gray version, which I hadn't seen before. It's the perfect color—not too dark, not too light—and to me, an amazing gray tee is as prized and wearable and tricky-to-find as a great black dress. Once you spot one that's just right you might as well buy it, given how much you'll end up using it. Now I've got my fifth James Perse tee en route and I couldn't be more excited about it.

I have one of these--because of this blog. And I will say that it truly is the best t-shirt I own.... But why oh why don't they cost $15? Isn't there a good under-$20 t-shirt on the market anywhere?

american apparel makes some amazing tees, my favorite of which is this deep v-neck style --it's $18, comes in 20 colors, and is made of really soft, sheer cotton:

would you say the casual tee is true to size?

yes, the tee fits true to size. i usually wear a small, which in this case is a size 1. if you're worried, you could always go one size up -- this is a style that would look good even if it's a bit loose.

I love James Perse, but I think if you're looking for a gray heathered t-shirt, American Apparel's are actually better (as well as being cheaper). Check out the tri-blend, it's incredibly soft & you can get it in a deep v-neck as well as a regular girly cut.
