Mining The Sale: Virginia Johnson

2009_08_viriginiajohnson.jpg
Many of you know I'm a huge fan of Virginia Johnson's gauze wool shawls—I pretty much never leave the house without one. I just noticed that a bunch of them are half off on her site, and in the product descriptions it says that the material she used this season is even softer than it's been in the past, making them that much more tempting. I love it in smoky purple floral, and also the apricot version with a cool, half-botanical, half-geometric print. Both are now $97. The totes and cosmetics cases also half off. For gifting purposes, I suggest stocking up on toiletry bags like this one, marked down to $16.

Come Find Me At Rugby!

I'm psyched to announce I'll be guest blogging at Rugby's site for the rest of this week! Click here to check out a link to my top five fall must-haves, and be sure to circle back, as I'll be updating daily. Later in the week I investigate how to pull off a beret, with pointers from Lucky's accessories editor Melissa Lum, a frequent (and flawless) beret wearer herself. Enjoy!

Celeb Trend In The Making: Lolita Glasses

2009_08_heartshapedsunglasses.jpg

I just saw this picture of Drew Barrymore wearing bubblegum pink heart shaped sunglasses, something I might normally be completely appalled by and yet she manages to look so cute and fresh and happy I can't help but approve. Then I remembered that Nicole Richie was also spotted in an identical-looking red pair, also improbably adorable, and then there's Katy Perry, who turned hers into spectacles. Now I'm wondering if we're going to be seeing Valentine-ish Lolita glasses everywhere. I'm not convinced I quite have the joie de vivre to pull them off, but for those who're ready to jump on the trend, there's a range of inexpensive options in different colors available here.

40 Percent Off At BestowBoutique.com

2009_08_bestowboutique.jpg
Gift shopping site bestowboutique.com is taking 40 percent off everything in their "for the bride" section from now through October 15th. Even if you're not in the market for the soon-to-be-married, it's still a really good sale, for universally useful things like this Marseilles soap delicates wash (I'd almost just buy it for the packaging, though I've actually tried it and the stuff is great), DL & Co's gorgeous, exotic-scented candles, and this cheeky, cute embroidered silk sleep mask. There's no coupon code to enter—the discount will be applied at checkout.

Mining The Sale: 70% off Kirna Zabete

2009_08_kzsale.jpgThere are lots of deals to be had at the moment on Kirna Zabete's website, though I don't expect their stock to last. My picks: Pierre Hardy's navy-on-navy metallic nylon weekender, which would also make for just about the chicest gym bag ever (was $565, now $169.50), and Stella McCartney's wear-it-for-years black silk cocktail dress (was $795, now $238.50).

Best. Scarves. Ever.

2009_07_megscarves.jpg
Designer Meg Cohen has long been my default for winter-weight scarves made of the most lusciously thick, supersoft cashmere (the only reason you haven't heard more about her here is that her stuff is very hard to come by online!). I stopped by her jewel box-size Soho shop yesterday and discovered that she's now also producing shawls in a lighter, wear-them-year-round knit. They're available in a range of solids from buttery yellow to magenta-ish plum, as well as a whole bunch of neutrals. They have delicately sheared edges—a detail I always love—but it's really all about the perfection of the cashmere, which is fine and silky smooth like nothing else. Meg told me to watch out for the marbled cashmere shawls she's doing this fall, and in the meantime, she's also stocking gorgeous, brightly patterned versions by Me & Cashmere in her shop. Styles from both lines are $165 and though they're not online, locals can drop by her store: Meg Cohen Design, 59 Thompson Street, New York City, or call 212-966-3733 to place an order.

Space Bags: Can Anyone Vouch?

2009_07_spacebag.jpgHave you guys tried Space Bags—you know, those as-seen-on-TV storage gizmos that seal and smoosh clothes down into really thin, airtight stacks? I'm contemplating putting in a rush order to help get everything to fit in my carry-on, but I don't know if that's me just being an infomercial sucker (I also recently fell for the ShamWow which was a bit of a disappointment). Thoughts??

20 Percent Off Everything At One Of My Favorite NYC Boutiques

TIV_dt_tanl.jpgAuto, my go-to destination for gifts (both epicescarf.jpgfor others and myself!), is offering a 20 percent discount on their entire inventory. I just spotted the Tivoli radio I wrote about last month—this thing really is such a pleasure to listen to and look at. They're also a great destination for Epice scarves, which come in such pretty patterns and feel impossibly soft and light (like this paisley cotton version in watercolor-y aqua, which ingridcusson.jpgalso works as a sarong). I love Ingrid Cusson's patterned suede checkbook covers, robshaw.pillow.jpgand this hand painted linen cotton pillow by John Robshaw is a tempting addition for my living room couch. The sale lasts until Jul 24th and the coupon code is "summersale09".

Cheap Thrills

gap.skinnystripe.sock.jpgMaybe it's a holdover from being a kid, gap.colorblock.sock.jpgbut I have a real thing for patterned socks. I love letting something graphic peek out from under my cuffs—why opt for a boring solid when there are so many fun prints out there? My favorites are generally colorful and striped, and Gap has some particularly good options at the moment. Like this blue and black version, and the color blocked ones that come in these warm tropical hues. They're a bargain at $6.50 a pair, or even better, $5 each when you buy two.

OMG! Sale At Smythson!

smythson.lilac.wallet.jpgI’m crazy obsessed with all things by smythson.black.passport.jpgBritish luxury goods company Smythson. Yes, their stuff is totally pricey, but the materials are so exquisite and it’s all so beautifully constructed and timelessly chic it’s worth the investment. Especially now, since I just happened to log onto their site and noticed that they’re in the middle of a huge sale! My head is spinning with all the possibilities. Should I spring for this lilac leather zip-around wallet (it would also make a fine little evening clutch—was $430, now $129)? Or, for my upcoming trip, there’s this handsome leather passport holder (was $170, now $51) and also this bright lemon yellow version with a jeweled clasp (was $185, now $92.50)? Both have pockets to hold your boarding pass too, a detail I smythson.yellow.passport.jpgreally love. Or else there are these correspondence cards with pink borders and matching tissue-lined envelopes (from $50 to $33.50 for a set of 10) which would be great to add to my stationery stockpile.smythson.stationery.pink.jpg There’s tons more to choose from, click here for an overview of the collection.
