Many of you know
I'm a huge fan of Virginia Johnson's gauze wool shawls—I pretty much never leave the house without one. I just noticed that a bunch of them are half off on her site, and in the product descriptions it says that the material she used this season is even softer than it's been in the past, making them that much more tempting. I love
it in smoky purple floral, and also
the apricot version with a cool, half-botanical, half-geometric print. Both are now $97. The totes and cosmetics cases also half off. For gifting purposes, I suggest stocking up on
toiletry bags like this one, marked down to $16.

Years ago I succumbed to the exceptional warmth and comfort of
Ugg boots. I'm a huge wimp about cold weather, and in the dead of winter there are few things that can relieve that icy, chilly feeling as satisfyingly. I love them, but really just for padding around the house or running down the block to the closest bodega—I find them too casual and beachy (growing up in San Diego, all the surfers wore these) for day-to-day. This year, I have my eye on
No. 6's Aviator Shearling Boots. This knee high style is also completely lined in shearling (like Uggs, you can slip them on barefoot), and the slim shaft, cool, crackly leather, and clog heel add up to a much more sleek look. They're water-repellent too, so you don't have to worry about taking them out in the slush. Pair them with a fisherman's sweater and skinny jeans for weekends, or for a night out, try a swingy wool dress and tights.
I'm psyched to announce I'll be guest blogging at Rugby's site for the rest of this week!
Click here to check out a link to my top five fall must-haves, and be sure to circle back, as I'll be updating daily. Later in the week I investigate how to pull off a beret, with pointers from Lucky's accessories editor
Melissa Lum, a frequent (and flawless) beret wearer herself. Enjoy!

A couple nights ago at a cocktail party someone commented on how the days are already starting to get shorter—summer always passes by way too fast, and the thought of letting go of the season always depresses me to no end. Since then I've been trying to remind myself of all the things I love about autumn, and have gotten as far as apples and sweater dressing. The latter lead me to poke around on
J. Crew's site for inspiration, and I've totally fallen for this
Maya cardigan. At first glance it's a straightforward, slim cut knit, but look closer and you'll see how the fabric gathers ever so subtly at the front placket, a detail that's at once arty, feminine, and high fashion. It's made of their merino wool, which is great for it's smooth, lightweight feel and lack of pilling, and comes in the prettiest shade of rose-tinged, goes-with-everything nude.

For me, the Holy Grail of t-shirts is
the James Perse casual tee.
You've heard me say it before, but it's perfection. It's made of the softest, sheer-but-not-see-through cotton, and fits snug up top and roomy in the midsection, with a nice deep scoopneck—all of which amounts to a great balance of comfy, flattering, and sexy. Just now on the company's site I saw they're doing
a dress version of the this style, cut from the same material with the same neckline, only with three quarter sleeves and a scooped bottom hem. This is one of those pieces that you could wear all year (with flip-flops now, and wool tights and lace-up oxfords later), dresses up easily (I like the idea of adding an elaborate statement necklace), travels well, and is easy to care for in the wash.

Designer Meg Cohen has long been
my default for winter-weight scarves made of the most lusciously thick, supersoft cashmere (the only reason you haven't heard more about her here is that her stuff is very hard to come by online!). I stopped by her jewel box-size Soho shop yesterday and discovered that she's now also producing shawls in a lighter, wear-them-year-round knit. They're available in a range of solids from buttery yellow to magenta-ish plum, as well as a whole bunch of neutrals. They have delicately sheared edges—a detail I always love—but it's really all about the perfection of the cashmere, which is fine and silky smooth like nothing else. Meg told me to watch out for the marbled cashmere shawls she's doing this fall, and in the meantime, she's also stocking gorgeous, brightly patterned versions by Me & Cashmere in her shop. Styles from both lines are $165 and though they're not online, locals can drop by her store:

I want an under-the-radar bag to take with me
when I travel abroad—something lightweight, durable, and compact. Low-key is a must, but even though I'm not really looking to score major fashion points here, I don't want anything that looks too outdoorsy either. And for the sake of making me less of a target for pickpocketers, (I was mugged once in
Florence—by a gaggle of little girls no less!—and have been paranoid ever since) I'd like it to have zippers and I'd like to be able to wear it slung across my chest (which is also the most comfortable, convenient style to carry for any extended period of time). This LeSportsac bag checks all my prerequisites. I love that it has several different compartments for organizing my stuff, and the nylon material it's made out of is exceptionally rugged though weighs next to nothing.
Buy it here for $38.

I happened to call my friend Iman in LA last night as she was running to the
Only Hearts store to stock up on
lingerie. Turns out it's something of a uniform for her—she swears by their Second Skins line and wears it daily ("pretty yet super-comfortable and totally disappears under whatever you have on" she says). She also acknowledged her compulsion for matching undergarments, a concept I find kind of fascinating, if only because I'm the complete opposite and have never coordinated undies a day in my life. To me it sounds like a lot of effort/extra laundry (does anyone really
wash a bra after every wear?), though Iman's formula is this: for every one
bra, she buys 4 pairs of underwear (3
boy shorts and 1
thong to be exact). Now I'm curious: what about the rest of you? Do you guys go the matchy-matchy lingerie route or are you content mixing things up?

Of the many, many dresses from
BCBG I'm coveting at the moment (
click here to scope out their selection if you haven't in a while—it's really good) I think
this is my favorite. It's the rich deep blue color and incredible embellished neckline that really get me. The combination somehow feels both really modern and vintage-y at once—like what Daisy Buchanan would wear sipping Gin Rickeys at some fabulous party were she around today. The cut of the dress is elegant and forgivingly drapey, and it's made of silk which I'm always a big fan of (nothing feels better against your skin). Be sure to check out the back view too; the
sequined collar extends to the back and opens up into a bigger, petal-like pattern and dips into a low U-shape, making the whole thing that much more chic.

There are a number of good things converging in
this DKNY handbag. Like
the extra-long strap, for starters, which allows you to wear it slung
across your chest. I love a
messenger-style purse. It's kind of like
the fashion equivalent of a bluetooth headset—the whole hands-free
thing just makes everything easier. I'm also a big fan of the chain
detail, which feels both tough and ladylike at once, but since the
majority of the strap is leather, it's lighter and more comfortable
than if the whole thing were metal. The tawny leather has a rich,
antiquated look, like it might have been pulled off an old fashioned
steamer trunk. And the simple silhouette and lack of logos add to
timelessness of the piece.
