So I am desperately in love with these red patent See by Chlo?? sandals, but I just don't want to spend $265 dollars on them (I dunno, maybe they're worth it?). I haven't been able to find anything that's a perfect alternative, but while searching, I did stumble across these red patent Birkenstocks. I kind of love the unexpected marriage of a '60s Mod sensibility with the inherent earthiness of a Birkenstock. And they can't really be beat for comfort. Plus, our extremely chic accessories director, Julia Topolski, rocks them all summer long (though in brown, not in red). What say you?
Satine Boutique, which is inarguably one of Los Angeles' best shops, just relaunched their website, and it looks amazing. (The old site was slightly clunky and hard to search.) In honor of this achievement, they're offering 15 percent all web purchases for today only—including Alexander Wang messenger bags and Erin Fetherston tunics. Just enter "lucky15" at checkout!
For some reason, I keep thinking about Laura Ashley—I don't know why, because I've never had that particular fetish before (in fact, I don't think I've ever even owned a Laura Ashley dress). By which I mean that I want floral prints. And more floral prints. I love this top—which seems like a surprising departure for the usually-sleek French Connection—because it mixes two equally girly patterns. The description claims that it's loose-fitting, but I think I might order it a size or two too big since I want it to be extra-flowy. Maybe I'll pair it with white pants and sandals—like this pair from Seychelles in our Accessories Under $100 guide—for spring? I can also imagine it tucked into a pencil skirt with proper heels. What do you guys think? Is it a buy?

Our crazily stylish West Coast Bureau Chief, Marlien Rentmeester, just dropped me a note about a new eco home site pioneered by Priscilla Woolworth (of the Woolworth department store family). It has everything from cleaning products and light bulbs to baby gear, but I'm particularly obsessed with the gift section. I love these striped beach bags and this horse pen is both weird and cool (and only $5). For more eco ideas, click over here to our super-useful green guide.
The under $100 denim guide from refinery29.com: Love the studded white jacket.
Mio is going to do a really chic, green gardening collection for Target.
Cool Hunting has a link the Marcel Dzama-directed Department of Eagles video, "Nobody Does it Like You." Love the military costumes!
Famous industrial designer Hella Jongerius designed a special Nike Air Force 1, available exclusively at Moss.
I love Fashion Toast's latest inspiration board.
Fashion inspiration: I want to wear a bow tie too!
I was an art major in college, and as lame as it sounds, I intentionally allowed paint to get all over my T-shirts. Dorky, I know, but I loved the way it looked. As with most things, however, it's often best to leave splatter painting to the professionals (my tees were way more messy than cool). I'm seriously coveting this splatter-print T-shirt from Forever 21, since it also appears to be freakishly soft. It's a bit like this dress on Fred Flare I blogged about a few weeks ago, but more understated. For $13.80, I definitely can't replicate the effect myself. But I wonder: Is this one of those retro trends I should just be avoiding altogether? What say you?
I've waxed on and on about great items on the website Swell before, but maybe because surf culture seems so far removed from NYC, I never remember to check back frequently enough. Every time I click on over, I'm blown away by the range of adorable and wearable stuff that they've put together—and not just for people who live on the beach. Plus, seemingly nothing breaks through the $100 barrier. Right now, I'm loving this simple, color-blocked cotton dress, this elephant-screened T-shirt (it looks super soft, and who doesn't love Dumbo?), and these royal blue sunglasses. And while it gives me shivers just to think about putting on a bathing suit right now, this Rip Curl suit is pretty freaking cute.
So I was clicking through our Spring Accessories Under $100 guide looking for a good neutral shoe option, and I stumbled on this tie-dyed clutch: It's really subtle, right? It almost looks like it was painted with watercolors. And I love it. Which then led me to this slightly more dramatic red option by the same Urban Outfitters line. The one on luckymag.com is only $38, which gives it serious high marks, but I like the fact that the red bag has a strap, which seems slightly more convenient. But I ask you, is it worth an extra $30?
For whatever reason, I've skipped the menswear-ish vest trend thus far (which is actually surprising, since I can really get into a boyish look). But this longer cut makes me think I could actually get behind it as a useful outfit building block, particularly worn over a tank. For the bottom layer, I would probably choose a floaty skirt—maybe even chiffon—since the streamlined cut of the vest would turn it all into something less voluminous and more cohesive. It could totally work over a summery dress too, as vest-master and online editor Laurel Pinson illustrates here. But is $88 too much to spend?
I don't know if you all are familiar with shopflick.com, but it's essentially an online shopping portal that has tons of video content, too. They run discounts on single items, and this one is particularly compelling: They're selling the double buckle belt by Rachel Comey for $39.99 (was $180). The sale officially starts tomorrow, but they're giving all Style Steals readers a head start since the items tend to sell out. Happy shopping!
