Fall essential, sure to sell out.

image.jpgIt may be the hottest, sweatiest, and nastiest day of summer in New York yet, but it's not stopping me from thinking about all the things I want for fall. And one such thing is a fur vest. Maybe I'm still fixated on all the cute French girls wearing them on the streets when I was there in November, working on the Paris shopping trip (to watch a hilarious—and random!—behind the scenes video that the photographer, David Land assembled, click here. We filmed it entirely on our HD Flip cameras.). Anyway, not only were the girls-in-vests so chic, but it was freezing, and I desperately wanted an extra layer. I'm jumping on the bandwagon this year, and I think it will be by way of this B.B. Dakota option at Fred Flare. In fact, I may head out to Greenpoint to their newish boutique to try it on in person. Fake fur, $60, and pretty adorable—it definitely seems like the sort of thing that will be blasting out of stores, so I'm inclined to pull the trigger now.

Norma Kamali at Wal-mart: I can go on and on...

0880638056270_215X215.jpgAnd so I will, because I really can't get enough of Norma Kamali's capsule collection for the mega-tailer. It's literally all under $20. Sure, it's not cut from the choicest of materials, but the pieces are really great, universally flattering, and total wardrobe work-horses. Take this really, really pretty cap-sleeve wrap dress in a flattering black jersey. It's $20! I'm totally obsessed. The convenient thing about the Walmart site is that it delineates whether the items are available in stores, and if they are, which ones. Nice!

Sale on at Anthropologie

933045_grm_b.jpgEvery day the sale section at Anthropologie gets deeper and933121_038_b.jpg deeper (read: better and better). Case in point, this Anna Sui-designed tunic just dropped another $50, making it 75 percent off (now, $49.95, was $198). I'm also a little bit in love with this Zachary Smile dress ($119.95), and this less exotic, but extremely practical short-sleeve blazer with a tie at the waist ($59.95). The online sale is great, but it's always worth stopping by an actual store-there's always loads there that has sold-out online.

$2 Tanktops: Old Navy is blowing them out this Saturday

Picture 41.jpegThis Saturday, August 15, Old Navy is blowing out their classic Picture 40.jpegrib-knit racerback tanks for $2 each in all their stores—much like the scene when they sold flip-flops for $1 earlier this summer, expect chaos, so go early! Meanwhile, I'm loving these neon-hued slub-knit tanks—they're not part of the $2 promotion, but they are on sale for $10 each.

Collaboration alert! Lyell for Urban Outfitters

16860033_068_b.jpgEmma Fletcher, the designer behind the much-loved, deeply feminine label Lyell (you can read about her New York flagship here), has created a capsule collection for Urban Outfitters. Aptly enough, it's called Fletcher (Lyell is called after her mother's maiden name), and it has all the pretty details that we adore about her original line (pintucking, lace, pretty buttons and finishes)—at insanely good prices. The full line hits the stores and websites this Saturday, August 15th, but there are four items on sale already. I'm really digging this vivid red silk dress ($88)—so pretty for summer. Snap them up now before they sell out! (Meanwhile, if you haven't checked it out yet, don't miss Sunshine & Shadows collaboration with the mega-chain. It's called Yellow is Gold, and I'm obsessed!)

Shopping the look: Subway crush edition

64647457-04.jpgAs much as I love to read, it's rare that I have a book in my bagPicture 35.jpeg that's captivating enough to distract me from checking everyone out on the subway. In fact, I've sort of mastered the glazed over "I'm staring at you, but it looks like I'm just spacing out" look. Tricky, right? The other day, I spotted a girl who looked perfect in a very real, attainable way as I was getting out at my stop and I'm pretty eager to copy her entire outfit. She had a totally normal body—I live in a neighborhood that's primarily inhabited by models, which means I see lots of great things on the street, just things that wouldn't necessarily look so great on me!—but the pieces had all the right, flattering proportions. The main item was a tribal-patterned skirt, much like this ikat-print version from Forever 21 ($10.50!!!). When a skirt is full, it necessarily makes your legs look thinner by comparison—and this particular one hit her right at the knee (this is generally a flattering length, but if you hate your knees, feel feel to cover them, too). Next, she had tucked in a slightly-slouchy chambray button-down that looked like it 65960161-01.jpghad been washed a hundred times—I think this version from the boys uniform section at Old Navy might work if the sleeves were cuffed ($14.50). I also love this option from Martin + Osa (it's for guys, so select the size accordingly), it's just a bit more expensive ($64.50). And finally, she finished the look with some big necklaces, a bit like this Egyptian-esque piece ($14.80).

Which dress? The under $70 quandary...

16965535_040_b.jpgI'm mildly infatuated with the new capsule collection, Yellow is 16965774_072_b.jpgGold, which just hit the Urban Outfitter's website. I'm allowing myself one dress this week and am torn between this subtle-striped tank dress (I love the color and the oversize pocket) and the lightly-patterned t-shirt dress in yellow (it also has a pocket, plus offers a bit more coverage). Thoughts?

Bracelets that compensate, color-wise

ATRJ5370B.jpgI love to accessorize—to a sometimes comical effect—and so I generally try to tone down the colors in my clothing to mitigate the bananas-ness going on elsewhere. Nobody wants to look like a clown, right? Meanwhile, since I've primarily been working an all grey, black, and white palette this summer, I think I can pull off these nicely affordable cuffs ($20!) from Alltherageonline. I love the beads on these stretchy, elastic bracelets best, though this other one is really pretty, too.

Where do you inadvertently splurge?

18562.jpgFor me, it's H&M (I always stop by for some layering t-shirts and StockholmPaperDrawersAll_l.jpgwalk out with multiple bags of things that don't fit in my already-packed closet). And also, maybe surprisingly, The Container Store. I cannot wind my way through its maze of aisles without buying at least four storage solutions—not only am I convinced that by maximizing my closets I can add hundreds of square feet to my apartment, but I just love canvas bins, and paper drawers with all my heart. Organizing to me, is what packing is to Shop Girl, Emily Hsieh. Fortunately, The Container Store is having a huge sale, which extends to the brilliantly space-saving, Lucky-favorite, huggable hangers.

Easy summer dress: $25

dress fpd.jpgI have a major soft spot for Clu t-shirt dresses—I have five, in fact,419eaQJ5SbL._AA260_.jpg and buy them whenever I stumble across them on sale. (That said, I'm tempted to pay full-price for this one.) They're super easy to style, perfect for packing (many are cut from wrinkle-free materials, or are intentionally rumpled), and excessively comfortable—three qualities that this very nicely-priced Mossimo t-shirt dress from Target also shares. I love the blouson shape and the elastic waistband—I would leave it as is, or throw on a big vintage belt—and it wins big points for the fact that it can go either super-casual or quasi-fancy. Definitely a no-brainer wardrobe addition (it's also available in black and red, though I'm partial to this royal blue).
