Diane Kruger: My Favorite Fashion Moments

1. Academy Awards, 2010

"At the Oscars everyone wears the same strapless princess dress with their hair pulled back. I wanted to wear something different, and Karl Lagerfeld was like, 'Please wear this!' It was his favorite Chanel dress."

2. Venice Film Festival, 2008

"This Dior Couture dress is the most beautiful I've ever worn. It was the original runway piece, so I couldn't breathe or eat all night. I suffered so much!"

3. Venice Film Festival, 2009

"I like this outfit because it's casual and what I look like in my everyday life. Those boots were Chloé—I had just flown in from filming Mr. Nobody and had no time to change.

4. Golden Globes, 2010

"This is vintage Christian Lacroix, and the picture doesn't do it justice. It was the most vibrant fuchsia you can imagine. I truly felt like a princess."

5. Academy Awards, 2006

"This was the first time I realized how crazy stylists get with dresses for the Academy Awards. I'd actually wanted to wear a Chanel dress, but the stylist of a Best Actress nominee blocked it—and she didn't even end up wearing it. Luckily, I loved this Elie Saab one, too."

6. Cannes Film Festival, 2007

"I was hosting the Cannes Film Festival, which was such an honor—I was the first German-born hostess. Karl Lagerfeld designed the dress for me. It was so intricate and just ... perfection."

Lucky Cover Shoot

"It's funny: On the hanger, this dress wasn't my favorite, but of all the beautiful gowns I wore for the shoot, I think this one came out the best. Once you put it on, it's such a great, great fit."
Diane Kruger may not be the first Hollywood actress to claim she's low-maintenance, but she may be the most honest. It's an unlikely trait for someone who's one of Karl Lagerfeld's muses (they're neighbors in Paris) and thinks people believe she wears only gowns (the slideshow will attest to this). But the 34-year-old doesn't have a stylist and almost always does her own hair and makeup (unless it's the Oscars). Kruger, whose thriller Unknown comes out next month, is actually fairly critical of her own technique. Looking at one picture of herself, she deemed the hair "medium good," while the makeup was "pretty good." The outfit, however, she loved. "If you have a beautiful dress," she says, "that's enough—you don't need much else." Her faith in all things fashion extends to her roles—she tends to embrace the aesthetic of her characters. After Inglourious Basterds, she had a thing for red lipstick. "I used to look for dresses I could specifically wear with red lips," she admits. Meanwhile, in Unknown, in which she stars opposite Liam Neeson, she plays a tough Bosnian girl who loves Doc Martens and ear piercings. "I actually just had my ear pierced, and it still kind of hurts," she says. "I love it—but my mom was not so pleased." For better or worse, her most daring fashion moments still resonate with her: "I look back at pictures of myself from 10 years ago and go, ‘What was I thinking?' "
