my mom, the style icon: jo miller

At a modish party in Austria, Jo Miller, mother of Sienna and Savannah, epitomized the chic, easygoing style that continues to inspire her daughters today.

THIS PHOTO OF OUR MOM was snapped around 1970 in Kitzbühel, Austria, during a fashion festival where people paraded through the area’s ski resorts dressed to the nines. Our mother is wearing a sheepskin fur coat she bought at a London boutique, a pair of denim flares and a knit cap. (She always wore hats and still does today. Her trick: Wear them with confidence.) At the time she was 28 and working for a record producer based in Monte Carlo—he flew her to Austria for the event. This photo is one of our favorites because she looks so carefree, full of life and effortlessly glamorous. Her style motto still sticks with us: “Wear the clothes, don’t let them wear you.” She always dresses in a way that reflects who she is. That’s an art—and truly inspiring.
