Executive Beauty Director

This fall’s smoky eye—inky and a little punk at Marc Jacobs, sexily slept-in at Saint Laurent and here, on Alexa Chung, in a gorgeous, cat-eye shape—is easier than ever to do at home. If you like pencils, there are new, silky-to-the-touch, fantastically long-lasting ones that come fat (Smashbox, Estée Lauder) or thin (Urban Decay, Maybelline) and create the perfect base with which to work. Smooth on classic black—perfection on Alexa in the slideshow, not to mention above on Olivia Palermo—as close to the lashline as you can get.
“What makes an eye sexy is when the color and the depth come from the lashes,” says Saint Laurent Beauté creative director for makeup Lloyd Simmonds. “You don’t have to ‘draw’ in the shape—it’s just the natural shape of your eye.”
To get the ultra-velvety look, dip an eyeshadow brush (a brush, not a sponge; worth the investment!) briefly in a little water and swirl it into a pan of black—or color of your choice—powder eyeshadow. Go over the line you’ve made with your pencil, and if you want more drama, smooth the color outward onto the lid with each stroke. Blur the edges with a dry brush or a Q-tip, and finish with lots of mascara. A pinkish nude lip is the quintessential complement.
