Winter Is Coming ...

My general winter philosophy: Hold off on tights until the last possible second because once you succumb, they’re on for nearly five months in New York City!

In case you were wondering, the above title is indeed a Game of Thrones reference. Along with a few other editors at Lucky (executive beauty editor Jean Godfrey-June, executive fashion editor Alexis Bryan Morgan and deputy editor Leigh Belz Ray, to name but a few), I’m a super-fan of the historical fantasy. The intrigue! The scheming! The costumes! I swear I’m going somewhere with this and not just delving into my personal pop culture obsessions. (Fine, you forced it out of me. Also: Mean Girls, Nashville and Homeland.) “Winter is coming,” the Stark family rallying cry, was on my mind as I prepared my closet for the season. Black opaque tights were purchased in multiples. Summer sandals were stowed, ankle boots dusted off.

It can all feel rather solemn—but winter and style don’t have to be mutually exclusive. December’s party-style musts (think whisper-thin, sexy slipdresses worn with the glitteriest of statement necklaces) can play nicely with January’s cozy-chic necessities (warm, woolly coats and clompy boots capable of withstanding nor’easters). Our fashion and beauty—let’s not forget about the importance of transitioning skincare, shall we?—editors have delivered brilliantly in this issue. From sweatshirt dressing—a trend we hope stays in fashion forever—to the newest takes on party dressing, you’ll be inspired to face the season head-on.

Kerry Washington, our cover subject this month, requires zero explanation. Yes, she’s fashion’s red-carpet sweetheart, and yes, she positively dazzles (while simultaneously smoldering) as Olivia Pope. But she’s also smart as a whip, down to earth and just plain cool. People often ask how we choose the celebrities for the cover of Lucky. I’m sure other magazine editors have their own criteria, but my internal dialogue is always “Am I inspired by her style? Yes? Okay, more important, do I want to be friends with her?” If the answer to both is yes, she’s a Lucky Girl.

Such friendships are the anchor for the story “The Originals.” Stylish people, I’ve found, tend to travel in packs. I asked two of my personal coterie—photographer Phil Oh and blogger Susie Bubble—to suggest a member of their pack, and so on, and thus “The Originals” was born. To gather this group of 16 was a fashion feat unto itself (shout-out to our bookings director Bridget Buckley), and I loved seeing how stylist Kathryn Neale managed to simultaneously stretch each influencer’s style to the max—yet let each be themselves totally.

You, dear reader, are no doubt part of your own fashionable style tribe—and I hope you celebrate the season with them, with good cheer, champagne and chic finds for all!
