Fifth Avenue: Then and Now

A glimpse of one of the world's most famous shopping destinations, before it was one of the world's most famous shopping destinations.

New York, New York—the Bronx is up and the Battery’s down, it’s a hell of a town and they say the neon lights are bright on Broadway...and all that jazz. They’re right, but it wasn’t always so. The skyline we’re familiar with used to be very different. In fact, the term “skyline” may have been stretching it at the turn of the century. Thanks to the impeccably well-kept archives of the New York Public Library, we’ve created a little snapshot of the Fifth Ave. from days of yore. Check it out and see if you can guess which of your favorite stores now stands in the place of an old castle, bank or...hospital.
