10 Really Warm Coats

Yesterday it was nine degrees when I woke up, which made me mad. I don't live in Montreal or Moscow, and that temperature wasn't in Celsius but Fahrenheit. It was COLD, unfairly so. I'd slept at my boyfriend's apartment the night before and had worn a mostly-decent winter coat, but not the one I'd reach for on nose-nipping, ear-stinging days like yesterday, when it hurts your teeth to talk. On those days I want something like these coats in the slideshow below. Designed for the sliver of winter that smacks you in the face when you walk out the door, they'll cushion you from the cold better than most of the things on your coat rack—and make you look good in the process.

The zippered neck makes all the difference.

Pull long knit gloves over the sleeves for a double layer of warmth.

For a simple, clean day-to-night coat, that wool is deceptively thick.

For those who want the warmth of a puffer without the quilted look.

It's hooded, too, for extra coziness.

Dig your arms into the giant pockets when gloves just aren't cutting it.

Oversized outerwear is very much on-trend right now (and roominess means you can really, really layer underneath it).

Cozy without sacrificing its ladylike shape.

Part down, part wool, with the pillow-y warmth where it really counts: on your limbs and neck, which get cold much quicker than your core.

The funnel shape at the bottom hugs your form, keeping in body heat that would otherwise escape.
