Style Crush: Kate Nash

London-born Kate Nash has taken a punky turn since her more mainstream debut, Made of Bricks (2007), which drew comparisons to the likes of Lily Allen. On her latest album, Girl Talk, Nash, who is currently on tour, deviates from her previously pop-y sound to explore her edgier side while still staying true to emotional subject matter. A diehard Quentin Tarentino fan (she'd love to play "a badass bitch from hell who got revenge on everyone who had scorned her" in one of his films), Nash is drawn to female characters who kick ass. It is no surprise Nash is fascinated with Varla, a go-go dancing bandit from the '60s cult film Faster, Pussycat! Kill Kill!. As the new international ambassador for Because I Am A Girl, a charity dedicated to educating women around the world, Nash is obviously all about female empowerment, and this has never been more apparent than on her just-released album, Girl Talk, on which she sings about heartbreak and the ups and downs of friendship.

While recording the album in Los Angeles, Nash was going through what she calls an "emotional personal struggle," while also unexpectedly falling in love with California. "I used to only stay in Hollywood for shows, not be driving, had no friends and hated hollywood," she says. "Then I got an acting manager, stayed in a family home, made some friends my own age, got to know some cool bands and artists and hung out with all of them whilst making the record. I honestly will say it was the most incredible experience of my life. It totally changed me for the better and I love the quality of life in California. I love the positive vibes. Why the hell not?" For her stay in L.A., Nash bunked with her new all-girl band, and had the time of her life rolicking in a mansion in Los Feliz. "It was totally the most funnest girl hang times in the world!" Nash says, "Swimming together, eating drinking, washing, making music, sleeping together. It was a huge sleepover. Imagine four girls running round a mansion for a month. It was insane."

A style chameleon, Nash has a lot of fun experimenting with different retro looks in her videos. In Do-Wah-Doo she plays an old-school flight attendant, and in her lastest video, 3AM, she decks herself out in vintage pink silk pjs and flower fascinators. With Nash's new sound comes a new, more rebellious, retro look. Jet black hair with blonde streaks, bold cat eyes, playful minidresses and bright red lips define this indie-chick-turned-pinup.

Cheeky Dresses

"I like stuff that I can move around in easy, that makes me feel confident. Kind of short, cheeky, punk style vibes," Nash says.
