Made up of vocalist Anastasia Dimou (the former lead singer of Cruel Black Dove), Courtney Voss (bass), Kathleen Carmichael (keyboards) and Jordan Johns (drums), Feathers creates electronic rock inspired by science fiction in the vein of Blade Runner. The group's first single, "Land of the Innocent," has already generated buzz in the UK, and the band's been compared to the likes of Depeche Mode. Bold textures, metallics and wild hair define the personal style of these futuristic sci-fi lovers.

The members of Brooklyn girl band Heliotropes (named after the toxic purple flower) describe their sound as "steeped in dark magic and new-romantic leanings." The foursome, whose album is slated for release this spring, is influenced by the distorted, dreamy rock bands of the '90s, like Mazzy Star. The Heliotropes girls keep their style low maintenance with oversized tees and tanks, denim and (of course) flannel.

Bringing a feminine slant to Austin's psychedelic rock scene, Kay Leotard aims to recreate the ethereal, trippy rock of the '60s. The vocal harmonies of Kristina Boswell and Mirna Hariz have been compared to the likes of Jefferson Starship's Grace Slick. True to form, Hariz and Boswell rock out in leather, denim and embellished minidresses while transporting listeners back to the groovy Woodstock era.

Okapi Sun serendipitously began when world travelers Leo and Dallas met in a London train station and became fast friends. The SXSW first-timers describe their music as a "cut and paste" of many influences, including dance, electronic, garage rock and tribal beats. Their fashion choices are also a bold mishmash of color and pattern. To hear the bandmates tell it, "Okapi Sun likes to stand out from the crowd with bright colors. We try and choose individual, eclectic pieces we can share—and that can be thrown together in different ways."

Formed in Taipei in 2009, Manic Sheep began as an electro-pop band, but changed its sound to reflect the influence of bands like Sonic Youth and The Kills. The group's promising self-titled debut album was released last December, and has garnered global attention. For festivals, drummer Chris Lo relies on effortless Urban Outfitters dresses and always packs light. "Of course, I have to bring my bass and pedals, so I won't have too much space to pack many things," she says.

Minimalist or not, Lo is loyal to an iconic scent. "Chanel No. 5 will definitely be in my suitcase," she says.

Brooklyn’s TEEN is a collaboration between Teeny Lieberson, formerly of Here We Go Magic, her sisters Katherine and Lizzie and their friend Jane Herships. Self-described as "forgoing girl-group gimmickry and fervor," TEEN is more lo-fi than your average indie girl band. The foursome prefers to record in the Connecticut countryside, and says their skillful vocal harmonies are due to the "flawless vocal connections between family and friends." With their vintage-inspired dresses, slouchy boots and matching Ray-Bans, TEEN is the very definition of hipster cool.

Austin-based band Gal Pals started as Jillian Talley and Lauren Marie Mikus' side project, but the two friends' hobby soon became a full-fledged musical endeavor. With their retro style and reliance on loud, energetic tracks, the duo reminds us of other girl garage bands like Le Tigre and The Like. In the video for their first single "For Our Sake," Talley and Mikus showcase their playful style with bright, high-waisted shorts, striped nautical tanks and precious heart-shaped sunglasses.
