13 Perfect White T-Shirts Our Editors Pretty Much Live In
Let me paint you a scene: it's last Sunday, late in the morning. There I am, standing in a pair of skinny dark wash jeans and a nude seamless bra, white T-shirts crumpled around my feet. The pile has been increasing in size for the last 45 minutes as I've been trying and re-trying every colorless crew-, V- and scoopneck—from the teeniest crop top to the longest thigh-skimming style—in my wardrobe, to complete the simple and effortless brunch ensemble I'm envisioning. (No, the irony of this is not lost on me.) When the clock hits 12:30, my stomach begins to aggressively grumble, and I acquiesce that it's just not going to happen. I throw on the same slouchy striped top I find myself wearing more times than not and resolve to go shopping for the perfect white tee once I'm better fed.
Fast forward several fruitless internet searches later to this moment right now, and my wardrobe is still lacking the quintessential, supremely flattering, dress-it-up-or-down, tuck-it-in-or-tuck-it-out, goes-with-anything—EVER—classic white T-shirt. Does just one even exist? According to my co-workers, all signs point to no. Nearly every person I've asked has suggested a different fit, cut and brand (although there is some overlap—whaddup, T by Alexander Wang and Hanes?), which honestly means there's but one solution: I'll have to buy them all. After reading their glowing reviews, you'll also want to. Click through the slideshow below to see what I mean.
"Hanes HIS way! I used to steal them from by brother but now I buy my own! They boyish cut gives them a super casual look and I love how soft they are!" - Amanda Letchko, Fashion Assistant
"If anybody out there is doing better white tees than T by Alexander Wang, I haven’t found them—and I have a minor white tee shirt addiction, so I speak with authority. The classic muscle style is a killer: the ultrasoft fabric adds a nice feminine contrast against my arms, which are large and muscular, and it's fitted with the perfect amount of slouch. When I have on a mini skirt or short shorts and need more conservative coverage up top, it also does the trick. T by Alexander Wang shirts don’t come cheap, that’s for sure! But I will cut coupons for a month if it means I can add a new one to the collection." - Denise Burrell-Stinson, Research Chief
"I never understood the obsession with the T by Alexander Wang T-shirts—it's a T-shirt! Is it really that much better that it's worth paying a premium for? The answer is YES and YES. Once I actually tried one on, I immediately understood the frenzy. It's so incredibly comfortable, hangs in just the right way, and I wear it so much that it completely warrants spending a little (actually a lot) more money." - Maura Lynch, Senior Beauty Editor
"I've tried pretty much every talked-up basic white tee on the market, and those from Alexander Wang's T collection really are the ultimate as far as comfort, drape and softness are concerned. The classic single-pocket version's my seasonless go-to—it's got a V-neck that's perfectly rounded and doesn't push things into SNL Digital Short "Deep V" territory—but for days when I'm feeling a tank top, the muscle tee's also a fine choice." - Elana Fishman, Senior Digital Editor
