The '90s Trend No One's Talking About—But We're Obsessed!

The reemergence of '90s-inspired fashion and beauty is hardly breaking news. It's been happening for a few years now, each new season tapping more pre-millennium trends than the last. If you're like me, and grew up during the decade of Pogs, Beanie Babies and S'Nick, each reinterpretation feels like a disorienting trip in Doc Brown's DeLorean. For instance, take overalls: I bought my first pair in third grade (and then got in trouble for leaving one strap undone). Blue eyeshadow? All day, every day during middle school. While both things are fun to remember, neither has a place in my life now.

But something about the recent return of skinnier-than-your-finger spaghetti-strapped tank tops and dresses seems less like a nostalgic novelty. The style was so ubiquitous, and for so long, that its recent return feels less dated; more, perhaps, like it just went on vacation for 15 years. Now that it's back, I think (unlike overalls and blue eye shadow) it's not leaving again anytime soon.

Worked with faded denim 15 years ago, works with it now. (But the window for wearing it with Birkinstocks and Elton John glasses has passed.)
