Everlane Dips a Toe Into the Footwear Game With Gotta-Have-'Em Summer Sandals
We've been huge fans of Everlane's silk button-ups, perfectly-cut tees and roomy weekender bags ever since the company launched in late 2011. Now, the affordably-priced retailer's preparing to expand into other clothing and accessory categories—and to start things off on the right foot (ha!), it's debuted a perfectly minimalist summer sandal that has us obsessed.
Available in either cognac or black leather, the Greek-style flat slingback costs $105—and considering the craftsmanship that goes into each pair, that's a bargain. We chatted with Everlane's CEO Michael Preysman to get the scoop on how the sandals came to be:
Lucky: How did you and your team decide it was time to venture into the footwear game?
Michael Preysman: Our vision is to find products that people need in their lives and then satisfy that need in the most beautiful and functional way. Shoes have always been part of that long-term plan, but we started with sandals in order to dip our toes (so to speak) into the complexities and nuances of footwear.
Tell me a bit about the design and quality of the sandals. Where are they manufactured?
We spent an incredible amount of effort finding the right factory. We tested out Italy, Peru and then stumbled upon a factory just steps from our office in Los Angeles. It's literally in the same complex. The leather is all Italian and it turns out that the factory owner grew up in Italy then moved here 20 years ago. He actually produces a select amount of accessories for one of the largest luxury houses in the world.
Clearly, Everlane is expanding its product range. What's next? Denim? Dresses?
We're always thinking about the essentials that we all need in life but we're being careful not to add noise to saturated categories. Our plan is to grow slowly and thoughtfully. You can definitely expect shoes and bottoms next year. And stay tuned for fall. We have a few surprises from recent travels to Italy.
