Snakeskin, a Lucky Epidemic

Jcrew_snakeskin
It looks like everyone here wants snakeskin sandals for summer. The first sign was when accessories director Chris Frey stopped by my desk to rave about a very glamorous pair from J.Crew: the Galaway, which have a silver metallic snakeskin upper, antiquated brass buckles, and straw-covered heels. The effect is very arty/Italian in its appeal: a bit off-kilter but ridiculously chic.

Seville_snakeskin Next came Hope, our fashion director, who pointed me in the direction of the Seville by Dolce Vita. The snakeskin is in graphic black and white, and they have teeny wedge heels to give a little boost in height. Very clean, sexy, and surprisingly affordable at $106. The Seville is from factorypeople.com, by the way, which is the e-commerce site for one of the Lucky staff's all-time favorite stores. If you're ever in Austin, Texas, make a point of stopping by.

A New Breed of Vintagey-Cool Denim

Stripe_jean
For the past few months I've been craving nothing but dresses and more dresses—until I saw what our creative director, Andrea Linett, was wearing to work the other day. They were jeans, but completely unlike any denim I'd ever seen: grayish blue and railroad striped, subtly and appealingly dusty-looking. They were just a little bit high-waisted—but not in an exaggerated way—and fit tight at the hip but long and loose at the bottom, which is pretty much universally flattering. I assumed they were one of her vintage finds, a dead-stock limited-release pair of Levi's from the '70s maybe. But as it turns out, they're new, from Urban Outfitters, $68, and couldn't be more convenient to purchase.

Plain, Simple, and Totally Amazing

Scarf_blog Look closely, and allow us to share with you exactly why we're obsessed with this scarf. For starters, it's gorgeous: The metallic stripes and wispy tassels add a bit of flash, but only precisely the right amount. It's therefore subtle enough to wear every day, and it's made of very fine cotton, so it's seasonless. Also, as fashion news editor Jen Ford points out, "If you loop it around your neck it basically doubles as a breezy, lightweight necklace." And despite all its refined and gilded fabulousness, it's only $50.

Lovably Strange

Clock_blog Usually the intentional kookiness of something like this limited-edition wall clock by Umbra would really rub us the wrong way, but in reality, it's too weird and wonderful to resist. It's made of reclaimed vintage toys (the designer, Matt Carr, sourced them all from the Goodwill next door to Umbra's Toronto headquarters) that are glued to a birch board and spray-painted. We love this inventive, brilliantly whacked-out approach to recycling, and there's something sweetly nostalgic (and yet decidedly sinister) about seeing all those little totems of childhood reinvented with a coat of stark, matte black. There were only 200 made, so if you love it, place an order fast.

Superluxe Serpentine

Ring_blog Our fashion director, Hope Greenberg, loves this exquisite 22-karat gold serpentine ring by Robindira Unsworth, and who could blame her? It's both very delicate and very cool, goes with pretty much anything, and makes enough of a statement that it can (and should, according to Hope) be worn on its own—so there's no need to fuss with piling on loads of other accessories. And while $200 isn't nothing to spend on a piece of jewelry, this particular ring looks like it costs so, so much more.

Saved!

Lipgloss_blog_2 If you've ever felt the despair at the cosmetics counter that comes upon learning that your favorite gloss/ eyeshadow/blush/ whatever  has suddenly been discontinued, then this is big news: Lancôme has a site-within-a-site, where shoppers can find a full range of products that are near extinction. Senior beauty editor Cristina Mueller and beauty assistant Cat Marnell have ordered dozens of tubes of their beloved and soon-to-be-departed raspberry-flavored, tinted Sweet Balm. And if you're partial to goods from MAC or Smashbox, then we're thrilled to report that they've got e-commerce outlets for endangered cosmetics too. We're hoping absolutely every beauty company will follow suit.

Beguiling, In a Cleopatra Kind of Way

Necklace_blog Fashion news editor Jen Ford was the first to spot this sculptural necklace by Lara Bohinc, and now, pretty much all of us want one. It's perfectly face-framing and dramatically sophisticated, and the aesthetic feels faintly Egyptian—but not too literal or at all costumey. "It's so glamorous, without being bling-y," adds Jen, who envisions wearing it with simple dresses and strappy flat sandals all summer long.

Sexy, Sexy

Belt_blog Super-wide belts are super-cool—but not particularly easy to pull off-unless you are as effortlessly stylish as our creative director, Andrea Linett—or at least know to look where she looks. She likes belts by Bef du Suede, in particular, the Corinne. It comes in a very deep and very versatile chestnut brown, and the spiky, studded edges, corsety fit, and oxidized copper buckles give it a look that's "a little ethnic, subtly sexy, but fashiony too," says Andrea, who recommends using it to cinch a tent dress to show off your shape and add a bit of edge.

Luxurious, Cool, and Covetable

Smythson—manufacturer of the chicest paper goods and travel accessories on the planet—just launched their new spring pieces on their site, and we want all of it. Yellow_walletThe Capri collection is done up in rich ostrich-grain calf leather in a crisp, sunny yellow hue. I'm obsessed with the travel clutch, which has built-in accordion-style pockets for your passport, boarding pass, and cash. To justify the splurge, think of it as a wallet, organizer, and evening bag rolled into one. While you're at their site, click through their linen collection too—it's their first fabric-based series, and the natural, flax-colored material gives it all a vaguely safari-ish, organic vibe.

Charmed

Bracelet_blog Our executive editor, Meredith Kahn Rollins, just clued me in to this limited-edition, sweet-but-elegant collection of charm bracelets from Doyle & Doyle, one of our favorite resources for gorgeous antique and estate jewelry. They're totally one-of-a-kind, handmade, and fashioned out of Victorian and '20s-era stick pins—and pretty well-priced as well. And if you can't make it to the actual Doyle & Doyle on Manhattan's Lower East Side, it's well worth checking out this website—some of their best pieces are online.

The Best Leg Shaving Cream Ever

There are some things you don't realize you need until you try them—Aveeno_blog at which point you wonder how you ever survived without them. Aveeno's Positively Smooth Shave Gel is the newest addition to my own personal list, for a variety of reasons: It's laced with an addictive, subtly almond-y scent; it foams up into a perfectly rich, dense lather; and it moisturizes like crazy. But most amazingly, it contains some kind of miraculous, all-natural soy extract with hair-growth-suppressing properties, so you don't have to shave as often.

Pssst!

Word from accessories director Chris Frey is that one would do well to check out ylang23.com as soon as possible. A rather gorgeous watch by a certain high-end luxury goods line is on sale for 45 percent off. Enjoy the hunt and do not delay!

Indie Fashion Online

Picture_1 Still relatively new to the Web (they made their first Lucky appearance in our February issue) style-scene.com, a site that's dedicated exclusively to young, independent designers, just keeps getting better and better. It's packed with sophisticated, beautifully detailed pieces that are utterly versatile too. We're especially taken with this diaphanous silk and lace Dolman top by H Fredriksson—great with a sleek pencil skirt or dark denim. Adding to the appeal, prices are refreshingly reasonable—nearly everything, even the fanciest items, is less than $300.

The Ideal Espadrille

Xrail_shoeI was trolling for the perfect pair of espadrilles from the legendary Spanish website espadrillesetc.com (they've got more than 100 styles to choose from, ship to the States in only one to two days, and it's all surprisingly affordable) and found just what I was looking for: the Amaya, a classic closed-toe wedge, updated in bronze. They're just the right height (flatteringly tall but not to the point of being impossible to walk in), sleek enough to wear to work, and I love the goes-with-anything, subtly textured metallic fabric.

Rock Candy

Rock_necklace
Fashion news associate editor Lauren DeCarlo fell in love with this chunky urban-organic Rock Necklace at Barneys Coop the other day: it is composed of "genuine New York City rock," as the Barneys website cheekily attests, made into a pendant with a tiny champagne diamond lodged in the center, and hung from a delicate gold chain. "So cool and earthy," says Lauren, "and the diamond and gold give it a luxe touch and add extra shimmer." Plus it's got that simultaneously feminine/sexy/tough vibe we're such suckers for here at Lucky.

An Anything-But-Basic Basic

Aliceritter

"I like a white shirt," says market director Anne Keane, who estimates that she has 15 or 20 variations hanging in her closet (we've seen them all, and each one is as distinctly cool—but different—than the next). She's currently obsessed with this tunic-length smock by Alice Ritter: "It's way more feminine than a traditional button-down oxford, but still just as crisp," notes Anne, who suggests pairing it with grey stovepipe jeans or adding a skinny low slung belt.

Even More Furniture We Don't Need,
But Crave

Astridchair
Anthropologie's housewares line has been getting better each season, and that goes triple for their furniture collection. From chesterfield sofas upholstered in smoky Belgian linen to this high backed arm chair with a bold dahlia print, the silhouettes are all very classic, but with a cool and feminine spin. If you're at all tempted to check it out, now's the time: it's 25 percent off through the end of the month.

Hope's Most Wanted

Khaki_blogThe weather's been consistently awful here in New York, but somehow it's propelling all of us in the office to shop even more than usual, particularly (and paradoxically) for cute warm weather pieces. Our fashion director, Hope Greenberg, has already zeroed in on the perfect girly-but-tough springtime dress by Daryl K: the Charlotte, a crisp khaki shift with a sporty drawstring waist offset by sweetly feminine capped sleeves.

Pretty, Cheap, and Built to Last

Makeupbag_blog It's stupid, really, how hard it is to find a cosmetic case that's as great-looking as it is practical and that doesn't cost a fortune. As a result, I've carried all of my toiletries in a drab black plastic case for ages. But our creative director Andrea Linett showed me her new makeup bag, and it's perfection: a roomy, handled zippered mini-tote with a gorgeous African batik print. The interior of the bag is laminated so you never have to worry about spillage, and best of all, it's just $25.

Under-the-Radar Jewelry Resource

Newring_xrail After a recent trip to London, editor-at-large Gigi Guerra came back to work with tales of an insanely great jewelry store called Kabiri with an equally insanely great website that ships to the States. They've got plenty of fine jewels, but the best of what we've found are unpredictable pieces you can't find anyplace else, like this amazing, perfectly abstract, rose gold-plated princess cut ring. Gigi's already got it and we're all inclined to imitate her.

Suddenly So Cool

Camper_2I hadn't given much thought to the shoe company Camper since I was in college, backpacking through Europe and seeing their leather lace-up sneakers on the feet of every Italian under the age of 30. But our fashion news associate, Erin Wylie, just tipped me off to the pieces in their spring collection, which are just as comfortable as their predecessors, only sleeker and more feminine. Like these Twins flats, which combine just the right amount of ingenue and edgy to look great with high-waisted jeans and a trench coat.

Great Hair, No Effort

Klorane_2Walking through the office the other day I overheard our associate fashion editor, Ann Brady, deep in conversation with one of our stylists, Tiffany Pasqualone. I passed by just as Ann said, "You really have to try it, it's so amazing," and naturally, I had to know what they were talking about. So Ann tipped us both off to a certain dry shampoo from the French beauty brand Klorane. On days when she doesn't wash her hair, Ann sprays on some of the product and rubs it into her scalp. "It absorbs oil, and lifts my roots to give me great volume and texture," she said. "And it's translucent, so you never have to worry about leaving marks on your pillowcase or under your fingernails, the way that pigmented powder versions do."  Seeing her hair was all I needed to convince me—although she claimed she hadn't washed it in 2 days, it looked as full and shiny as could be.

Green and Great

Ww_slcgiraffeI just discovered a brand-new site called Green With Glamour, whose mission is to consolidate the chicest eco-friendly clothing and housewares all in one place, and immediately added it to my list of bookmarks. It's amazingly true to its name; I scoured the site and didn't see anything the least bit crunchy on offer. Standouts include the slinky giraffe-print camisole made of vintage silk and the GWG clutch, which is also crafted from recycled fabrics and has an oversize buckle that's been painted with non-toxic paint. And check out their home stuff, in particular Woodson & Rummerfield's green birdcage wallpaper, which is made of recycled paper and vegetable dyes. The vibe is part Alice in Wonderland, part chinoiserie—and I am fully, utterly obsessed.

Perhaps the Perfect Tunic

Dr20322t Our creative director, Andrea Linett, had on the coolest cap sleeved tunic over superskinny J Brand cords last week at the office and I had to know where she got it. So she pulled me into her office to take a look at her friend's line, Guy Baxter, which is based in L.A. The piece she had on turned out to be the Barney Dress, in a deep charcoal color with an intricate lavender floral print. Andrea clicked through the site and showed me a few more of her favorites, like the Bobby Tank ("Perfectly slouchy and made of the softest, ultrathin cotton," she said) and the Valentina Dress, a spaghetti-strap halter that can be tied in a couple different ways and cinched with a glossy, lemon yellow sash.

Couch Envy

Couch2 One of the unfortunate side effects of being a total design junkie is that I'm constantly shopping for furniture that I don't need and don't even have space for. Hence, my completely absurd desire to purchase this Antoinette Fainting Sofa from Urban Outfitters. Not only is it undeniably cute—I love the curvy silhouette and girly-but-graphic flocked floral pattern—but it's refreshingly affordable, too.
