I just stumbled on illicodesign.com, which specializes in selling unique, modern housewares all made by independent French designers. There's so much great stuff to choose from, and nothing is as expensive as I would have imagined: One of my favorites is the silver-lined magazine tote by Maison Georgette ($75). 
It's made of sturdy printed canvas, is a stylish means to control clutter, and could also double as a fashiony picnic basket. I also love the Derviche revolving serving tray ($58), which is hands-down the coolest version of a lazy Susan I've ever seen.
