Style Challenge: High-Waisted Denim

Widelegged18th_blogThough high-waisted pants can be tricky to wear, I noticed two of my co-workers successfully pull off the look at the office last week. For editorial assistant Alexandra Willinger, the key to getting her new 18th Amendment flares right is pairing them with something simple, like a solid cap-sleeve tee and patent leather skimmers. "This style works for me because they are high, but not too high," she says. "And they're incredibly comfortable." Fashion news editor Jen Ford has Widelegged_blogbeen wearing her new Malik jeans by J Brand with a sheer men's button-down and strappy brown sandals, and loves them for similar reasons: "They hit right at the top of the hip, so they can flatter lots of body types," Jen says. "And they're also made of the lightest-weight denim I've ever seen, which looks better on most people than ones made of rigid fabrics."

Winning Bronze

Eriebasin_blogErie Basin in Red Hook, Brooklyn, might be my favorite store to have opened within the last year, and these Lee Hale candlesticks are a great example of why. I've never seen anything like them—the bird feet are delicately rendered in oxidized bronze and exquisitely detailed in a Ted Muehling-ish kind of way. They're both totally weird and utterly beautiful at the same time, and if I had the means, I'd buy them by the dozen to scatter across the table at my next dinner party. Erie Basin is packed full of other stunning but offbeat objects, both new and vintage; and if you can't make it out to Red Hook, the e-commerce site will give you a satisfying taste of what they've got in stock.

Pure and Simple

Perricone_blog"Most body creams are either overscented and cloyingly sweet, or their consistency is almost too intensely buttery," notes senior beauty editor Cristina Mueller. Which is why she's totally devoted to this olive-oil-based lotion by N.V. Perricone: "It's fragrance-free, long-lasting, and rich but not over the top," she says. "And the fancy ingredients are of the quality you'd normally only find in skincare for your face."

The Perfect Summer Sweater

Cardigan_blogAssociate fashion editor Ann Brady has been wearing the same cardigan wrap pretty much nonstop ever since creative director Andrea Linett (who also has one) gave it to her. It's hooded; surprisingly warm, given that it's made of tissue-thin woven silk; and loose-fitting in a really flattering, body-skimming way. Great for planes—where Ann can frequently be found, traveling to and from shoots with her boss—and just about everywhere else as well.

Sheer Genius

Pauljoe_blogUntil I met Sania (in my opinion the absolute top brow expert in New York City), filling in my brows with any sort of powder or pencil was a dubious proposition. Any attempt to darken them resulted in a creepy, painted-on look that made me want to wash my face as fast as possible. But then Sania turned me on to this Paul & Joe pencil which has completely changed my routine. Apply it with a light hand in short, feathery strokes and trace the perimeter of your brows. Each pencil comes with two different colors so it's very easy to get a great match, and the pigments are really subtle and blend easily, which makes it nearly impossible to mess up.

Flat-Out Cool

Officearuba_blog_2Staff editor Jennifer Romolini has been loving the new flats on the British shoe site Office. "All of the styles seem a little offbeat and original, and they're surprisingly affordable too," she says. Most hover around $75—still a good Officeasha_blog_3deal despite the ever-going exchange rate. I asked Jennifer to narrow down her favorites to three, and she came back with the following: "Aruba," red satin ballet flats with pretty gathered fronts; "Asha," which are incredibly good, huarache-ish sandals Officeaphrodite_blog_2in silver metallic; and a sleek, sculptural take on a simple black flat called "Aphrodite."

Easy and Breezy

Bhati_blogOur managing editor Regan Solmo's summer fixation is these beaded silk bracelets. There's something very simple and—in pale colors—pretty in a ballet-ish kind of way about the coiled ribbon and gold beads. But they come in tons of colors too, and if, like Regan, you decide that one's just not enough, they're very cute when stacked up on your wrist.

New and Noteworthy: BluLuxe Home

Blupaisley_blogI just came across a brand-new site called BluLuxe Home that's a great source for chic, one-of-a-kind housewares. They've got a compelling mix of new and vintage pieces that cover pretty much any aesthetic—from a groovy paisley needlepoint pillow to Bluchair_blog_2a mahogany Chippendale chair reinvented with a coat of high-gloss red paint. Everything, new stuff included, is stocked in limited quantities, so if you like what you see, order it post-haste.

Summer Blues

Citizens_blogAssociate fashion editor Ann Brady has been in the market for what she anticipates will be her new summer staple: light-wash denim shorts. She finally found a pair by Citizens of Humanity that fits all of her criteria: It's non-whiskered, and is neither too short nor too tight. "The Bermuda style feels just a touch masculine, which is good to counter all the feminine blouses I've been buying lately," Ann says. "And they'll look great with bolds or pastels—and of course a little bit of a tan too."

Country Store Chic

Vermont_blogWhen it comes to scouting out great stuff, our senior fashion editor, Laurie Trott, is obsessive enough to leave no source untapped. She recently found a cool summer basic in the men's section of The Vermont Country Store's website. Technically, it's a "gentlemen's lightweight patchwork nightshirt," but Laurie co-opted it as both a beach cover-up and dress. "So cute over a bikini," she says, "or to fancy it up a bit at night, add heels and a skinny buffed-leather belt."

May 24, 2007

Nice and Easy

Anthropologie_blogAnthropologie's "Billie" Tunic is the current front-runner in accessories assistant Becca Aronson's ongoing search for the perfect summer dress. It's made of really soft silk and combines a range of pretty Indian-inspired patterns (though I wouldn't necessarily think to put all those colors and motifs together, the overall effect is very chic and only subtly hippieish). And while it's cut modestly enough to be office-appropriate, you can wear it for an evening out and still feel sexy, too.

Keepers

Keep_blogFashion news contributor Erin Wylie's latest obsession are these Guatemalan-print sneakers by Keep. "I love the idea of slip-on tennis shoes," she says, "and not only does the pattern on these feel really fresh, but they're more sleek and feminine than the average pair." To keep the look polished, do as Erin does and wear them with tight, dark denim.

Sugar and Spice

Vosges_blog Vosges, a Chicago-based company known for luxurious chocolates in weird-but-delicious flavor combinations (like my personal longstanding favorite, the Naga, a truffle dusted with curry powder), has just introduced the most super-deluxe peanut butter cup ever. That all the ingredients are the fanciest and creamiest is a given, but the unexpected surprise is that it's topped with a little bit of pink Himalayan salt and some kind of rare Fleur de Sel that's the perfect, savory counterpoint to the smooth, sweet (but not too sweet) peanut butter.

Happy Accident

Deva_blog_2While on holiday last week, senior beauty editor Cristina Mueller, who has straight hair, ran out of shampoo and resorted to borrowing some from a friend—a friend with naturally curly, ringlet-y hair. It turned out to be a sort of non-shampoo shampoo just for curly hair: It doesn't lather, which cuts down on frizz, and is sulfate-free. But Cristina swears it works amazingly well for the rest of us too: "Much more moisturizing than my regular shampoo," she says, "and there was just enough conditioning stuff in there that it acted kind of like a light leave-in conditioner that totally detangled everything."

All Good

Atada_blogFashion news associate editor Lauren DeCarlo recently discovered the bag line Helena de Natalio, which was started by designer Helen Hoppock, in large part to support local artisans in Buenos Aires, where she's based. The goods, like this roomy cocoa-colored tote, have a rough-hewn, handcrafted appeal, with details—like tassels, braided handles, and marbly leather—that can look really cheesy (and cost twice as much) when they're mass-produced. But this is the real deal, and with proceeds going to a great cause, we have all the reasons we need to indulge.

New to the Web: Roam

Roam_blogAnother great Manhattan boutique, Roam, has hit the Web: Shoproam.com stocks all the chic, moderately priced jewelry and accessories we'd come to love them for—and then some. I particularly like these dangly teardrop earrings, which come in a little hand-sewn pouch made of vintage fabrics. Check out their housewares selection while you're on the site—it all shares the same clean, organic vibe as the jewelry, and is equally tempting.

Fun Couple

Bikini_blogThis bikini is so simple (pink and white stripes) and yet so weird (studded leather) we're not sure whether we love it or think it's insane—but we're pretty sure we love it. It's like what Barbarella would have worn if she had been invited to Nantucket.

Scarily Beautiful

Pantherring_blogAccessories director Chris Frey has been noticing—and loving—a rise in jungle-animal-inspired jewelry, and this gilded panther ring is one of her favorite examples of the trend. "It's beautiful and menacing at the same time," she says, "and the combination of rubies and gold feels particularly rich." It's definitely striking on its own, though Chris likes the idea of stacking it with thin gold bands for a more gypsyish look. And, on a delicate chain, it'd also make a very cool pendant.

Oxfords—Not Just for the Über-Preppy

Oxford_blogOn her daily commute, executive editor Meredith Kahn Rollins began noticing an abundance of cute downtown-y girls riding the subway in equally cute, ever-so-rumpled shrunken oxfords. Though Meredith is too large with child for shrunken anything to make sense right now, she's just obsessive enough to have felt the need to track down the perfect one anyway. She found it at Steven Alan, master of the cool button-down. Right now he's doing a particularly cool pin-tucked, three-quarter-length-sleeved version. It's a great thing to wear on weekends with a denim skirt, and works just as well for the office with a black cotton suit.

Good News for the Small But Busty

Freya_blogIf you happen to be among the tricky-to-fit population of women with a narrow rib cage and ample chest, you'll be especially pleased to know that British-based lingerie company Freya makes bras—pretty ones you'll actually want to wear—with widths as small as 28 and cup sizes going up to J. In addition to the requisite underwire for support, they've got a lot more feminine details (delicate lace, teeny ribbons) than the skinny-but-busty have come to expect in an undergarment.

Controversial Yet Totally Appealing

Beauty_blogThough the Lucky beauty team is divided about this scent (subtly powdery, with violet and musk—you might have to be a serious perfume lover to appreciate it fully), all parties are equally taken with the weird, oozy, wildly cool texture of Kenzo's new Perfumed Body Nectar. It looks exactly like honey, feels like a really rich moisturizer, and is incredibly pretty on skin—not greasy, just slightly dewy.

Fringe Benefits

Santorini_blog Accessories assistant Becca Aronson has been on the hunt for flat fringe sandals. ("They're bohemian and basic at the same time, which I love," she says.) And after seeing the gazillions of styles that passed through the fashion closet she's narrowed it down to these two: Rachelcomey_blog the Santorini, which come in rich chocolate brown suede embellished with little gold studs and convey a ladylike take on the gladiator look; and Rachel Comey's slightly more upscale version, which from the front are playfully reminiscent of tasseled loafers.

Rethinking Tennis Whites

Jacket_blog Stella McCartney's collection for Adidas includes the chicest version of a tennis jacket I've ever seen. It's made of super-lightweight polyester and has plenty of fashiony details, like a dramatic funnel neck, three-quarter-length sleeves, and a cropped waist to keep things interesting. Our fashion market assistant, Jenny Kang, isn't much for tennis but has big, brilliant plans to wear one off the court, with a sequined tank underneath at cocktail hour.

Cuffs On

Bracelet_blog Fashion news editor Jen Ford knows a thing or two about cuff bracelets, given that most days she manages to incorporate one into whatever outfit she has on (an outfit which also probably involves toweringly tall platform sandals and a black-and-cream palette). She's got tons in her jewelry box, from intricately wrought silver to chunkier wood versions, and the most recent addition to her collection is this geometric number from relatively new site Rimistyle.com. It's made of delicate hammered metal, is perfectly airy and sexy, and though you'd never guess by looking at it, it's only $20.

3 Girls, 3 Dresses

Dress2_blog Staff editor Jennifer Romolini has been getting a head start on her summer shopping, and amidst scoring one of many amazing vintage dresses on eBay after another (the girl has a knack: give her $50 and you'd be floored by what she can sniff out and win via online auction), I challenged her to find a great summer dress for the rest of us. This jumper from Built by Wendy was her pick: "It's simple, easy to wear, dresses up or down, and I love its bold but pretty color." Dress3_blogI then put fashion market editor Meg Cuna to the challenge, and she chose a navy and white polka-dot version from Marc by Marc Jacobs. Very demure, though it still has a bit of a 1950s-ish pinup-girl vibe to it. Dress_blogAnd here's my version of summer perfection: a crisp, all-white A.P.C. sundress, which to me feels very classic and French girl, and has pockets—which as you may know I'm always a sucker for.

Indie Chic

Tote_blog Styleprodigy.com is a great, newish resource for one-of-a-kind accessories, clothing, and housewares from small independent designers. It's got a little of everything on the site, from platform cork-heeled wedges to delicate gold jewelry. Our accessories director, Christine Frey, whose personal taste veers toward sophisticated and streamlined, fell for this pared-down silver tote: "I'm usually reluctant to go for metallic pieces, but this one is semi-matte so it feels a bit more understated," she says, "and I love that the zipper is its only ornamentation."

Good Eggs

Pinkeggplanter
Fashion news associate editor Lauren DeCarlo and I share a mutual obsession with these earthenware hanging planters by J Schatz. In glossy pastels they look very Easter egg-ish and have a similarly sweet and cheerful quality, too. There are lots of color options, each one as tempting as the next, and they're all carved by hand for a subtle bit of embellishment. As Lauren suggests, they'd be perfect to liven up a bathroom, and I also love the idea of getting a few to fill with potted herbs to hang in a little cluster at staggered heights above my kitchen sink.

Freshening Up

Beauty_blog The girls in the beauty department tipped me off to this hair freshening spray by Jonathan, which works similarly to hair powder, but with lots of added benefits: It soaks up oil and any other styling products you may have used in your hair and adds movement and shine in the process. It's a great thing to keep at your desk to spritz on at the end of the day, when your hair needs a little boost. Interestingly, the beauty girls didn't stop with just spraying it on their (always very gorgeous) hair: They are now spraying it on their faces, which doesn't give your skin movement and shine, but does seem to leave you glowy and make you feel very refreshed overall. And since it's 100 percent vegan, and gentle, and it smells faintly like pomegranate and cucumber, it's not that crazy an idea after all.

Time Check

Watch_blog I'm not sure I quite understand these Nooka watches that fashion news contributor Erin Wylie showed me the other day, but I'm totally intrigued: Instead of standard hands or an LCD display, these have an illuminating bar and a series of dots that signify the minutes and hours—it's a little Da Vinci Code, but the space-age aesthetic and primary colored rubber make them cool in a street-y, Japanese hipster kind of way. Or more accurately, cool in a just-trust-Erin (who seems to have an internal antenna for what's cool before the rest of us catch wind) kind of way.

Aloha Fashion

Pouch_blog Though its location might be a little misleading, Honolulu-based Aloha Rag is one of the best sources—on or off the mainland—for edgy, fashiony clothing and accessories. And happily for those of us who don't have a Hawaiian vacation planned, it also has an impossibly great website, where I have most recently fallen in love with this Martin Margiela silver pouch. It comes in futuristic polyester-coated leather that's been distressed to look like aluminum foil, and has a grannyish, old-fashioned metal clasp (which is cocked to one side to give it a playful, modern jolt). And beyond using it as a coin purse, it's large enough to work as a makeup bag or miniature evening clutch too.

The Ultimate Aviator

Sunglasses_blog_2 I know I'm not alone in saying that there's nothing I'd rather look better in than aviators—without a doubt the coolest, sleekest, toughest style of sunglasses ever. Unfortunately, I've tried several pairs over the years with less-than-ideal results. They're either too big for my face (causing them to eventually slip off my nose as I'm wearing them), too sloped on the bottom to be flattering (generally true on most faces), or else modified to the point where they've lost their classic appeal. But while I was shopping last weekend I stumbled on these—a simple, straightforward style with gunmetal gray lenses. They fit snugly without pinching the bridge of my nose, and their softly rounded frames worked on both me and my shopping buddy—despite the fact that the two of us have wildly divergent face shapes.

The Perfect Summer Shoe

Shoe_blog Most of us around here can be accused of being serial  shoppers—which is to say, there is one particular type of item we find ourselves buying over and over again. My own compulsive desire is for strappy flat sandals—I can't get enough of them, and I was most recently seduced by this pair, which fashion news editor Jen Ford sent me a link to from Portland-based shop Le Train Bleu. They're easy to walk in, adaptable for work or weekends, and (particularly in glossy black) strike the perfect balance between feminine and ever so slightly edgy. And at $58, the price was definitely a pleasant surprise too.

Instantly Prettifying

Lipstick_blog Executive editor Meredith Kahn Rollins recently picked up this new lipstick-gloss hybrid by Benefit, and the reasons she loves it are multiple: "The nicest combination of sheer color and intense moisture," she says, "and it layers up really well to give you more intensity if you want it." It comes in a range of flattering pinks and nudes, and the end result is very similar to what you get with most glosses (minus even so much as a hint of goopy stickiness)—just a wash of pretty, translucent, natural-looking color.

Francophile

Tote_blog I just stumbled on illicodesign.com, which specializes in selling unique, modern housewares all made by independent French designers. There's so much great stuff to choose from, and nothing is as expensive as I would have imagined: One of my favorites is the silver-lined magazine tote by Maison Georgette ($75). Tray_new_blogIt's made of sturdy printed canvas, is a stylish means to control clutter, and could also double as a fashiony picnic basket. I also love the Derviche revolving serving tray ($58), which is hands-down the coolest version of a lazy Susan I've ever seen.

Tried and True

Beauty_blog Beauty director Jean Godfrey-June has astutely noted that whoever invents the cure for undereye circles will live quite well indeed for the rest of their days. No cream currently on the market goes all the way toward solving the problem, but every year one does come along that is just that much better than all of the creams that came before it, and staff editor Jennifer Romolini has found the breakthrough product of '07: Revision Skincare's Teamine Eye Complex, which she discovered at the Tribeca Medspa in Manhattan. She showed it to our editor in chief, Kim, who obsesses over her undereye circles and therefore sets the bar very high for any products purporting to help solve the problem. But now she's with Jennifer, who says, "It helps with the puffiness, it helps with the circles, it started working within a week. Whatever's in this is pretty amazing."

Beach Bound

Bag_blog We love associate fashion editor Noria Morales' Nui Loa bag, which is made of vintage Hawaiian fabric and '70s-inspired tortoiseshell handles. "It's structured enough to wear for evening or work," she says, "and you would be amazed at how much you can carry in here—I've used it at the beach before and managed to fit in my towel, flip-flops, sunscreen, and book."

May 04, 2007

Cool, Sleek, Cheap

Shoe_blog Contributing editor Marissa Cooley found the greatest pair of all-purpose, luxe-but-notably- inexpensive shoes the other day. They're sexy, comfortable (not only is the heel thick enough so you won't wobble, but the soles are padded too), and totally versatile. "They sort of have a gladiator quality, but without an overload of fussy straps," says Marissa. And yes, rather insanely given all of their charms, they're only $89.

Just Insanely Cute

Jcrew_blog There is just something so unequivocally chic and cool and rich-hippie fabulous about this Talitha dress from J.Crew: The overall aesthetic feels vaguely '60s-ish in origin, but the wide black trim and simple silhouette give it a modern twist. We can already imagine wearing it at summer weddings or—wildly impractical though it may be—throwing it on over a bikini at the beach. It's limited-edition, and considering how fast their embroidered Mexican-style tops sold out earlier this season, we suggest putting it in your online shopping cart immediately.

Candle Perfection

Candle_blog Out of the sea of candles senior beauty editor Cristina Mueller has seen, smelled, and burned over the years (and considering that she and her colleagues are sent roughly 30 a week, they kind of add up), there are very few that have led her to gush quite the way she has been about this brand-new one by L'Artisan Parfumeur. "It's fresh and whispery—which is especially hard to pull off when it comes to floral scents—and completely unsweet," she says. "It truly smells exactly like crushed orange blossoms." Perhaps just as important, its packaging has that sleek, old-fashioned, subtly goth vibe we generally find impossible to resist.

Wanted: Metallic Dresses

Model1_blog Completely independent of one another, two of my co-workers have dropped by to confess cravings for swingy metallic dresses in the past 24 hours. The first, senior associate fashion editor Heather Summerville, has her eye on this silver Shimmer Dress by Et Vous. "This is basically a fancier version of a T-shirt dress," she says. "And I love that I can wear it with a blazer to the office or out at night with heels." Model2_blog

As a splurge-y alternative, check out Vanessa Bruno's gilded Sack Dress, which editorial assistant Alexandra Willinger has been eyeing: "Totally glamorous but not too fitted or too girly, which is key." And it's worth noting that both have pockets—which somehow makes any dress that much cooler and fun to wear, if you ask me.

All-Natural

Stool_blog A friend of mine in L.A. pleaded for help in finding a gnarled wood stool, which she thought might add a certain Venice Beach-in-the-'70s vibe to her new house. These pieces are gaining in popularity these days and usually cost a fortune, and I found one so inexpensive that I thought it was worth sharing with you (that is, if you like this sort of thing, which I, emphatically, do). It's the Grove Stool, which is handmade out of sandblasted roots. It adds just the right dose of the hippieish look she was craving and would work equally well in a streamlined, modern setting as it would mixed in with more traditional elements. Plus, it's $195.

Playing Favorites

Model_1a_blog I recently discovered (and became immediately obsessed with) the Park Vogel Scoop tee—it's made of really fine, thin cotton, and has the coolest, drapey cut, which makes it feel a bit more elegant than the average T-shirt. With so many options in the market, I decided to take a mini office poll to find out a couple of the other reigning favorites. Model_2_blog Fashion director Hope Greenberg's pick is the Clu Boy T Shirt: "It's really soft and the fit is just right—boxy but still lean and sexy." And fashion news associate editor Lauren DeCarlo gives the Destroyed Tee by Alternative Apparel her vote: "It comes looking perfectly worn-in, like you've owned it for years. Plus, the sleeves hit your arms in a way that makes you look like you've gone to the gym even if you haven't." So now, of course, I have to have those too.Model_3_blog

Green Clean

Soap_blog Environmentally friendly household products purveyor Method has just expanded into a new line of body lotions, soaps, shaving creams, and body washes, and we're already big fans. True to form, the products are completely natural (no icky chemicals, no animal by-products either), affordable, and come in fresh, real-smelling scents like Citron Leaf and Beach Sage. And if that's not enough, the packaging alone would be reason to give them a try—it all has a great, sleek-but-colorful, groovy-cubist look.
