A Little Goes A Long Way

Occitance_blogSenior beauty editor Cristina Mueller is newly obsessed with this concentrated essential oil she sampled by L'Occitane. It's supposed to function as a moisture-boosting, repairing serum under your regular face cream, though as Cristina discovered, it's great all over too. She tried it in place of a body cream right before getting on a flight (no worries about FAA security hassles, it comes in a one-ounce bottle) and fell in love: "It sinks in instantly, lasts, and makes your skin feel incredibly smooth and soft." And lest you fear that using it her way means blowing the entire bottle in one go, Cristina is quick to point out that two or three pumps is enough for arms and legs.

Comfortable and Classic

Scholls_blogIf you happen to catch fashion director Hope Greenberg one of these summer weekends, it's likely she'll have on these Dr. Scholl's wood sandals. "They're the perfect combination of right-now chic and throwback 70's," she says, "and I love the sophisticated luggage color."

Worth the Splurge

Vivienne_blogOur fashion assistant, Nicola Miller, goes crazy for all things Vivienne Westwood, and topping her list of favorites is this striped halter dress. "The mix of cotton fabric and nautical stripes are perfect for the summer," she says, "and it highlights the back and shoulders, which is sexy without being over-the-top."

Wear It All Season

Stevenalanshirt_blogSenior market editor Lynette Pone is really into this cotton top from Steven Alan. It's got a really straightforward, boxy cut that's just a bit nipped in at the waist to accentuate your shape. The refined box-plaid print is like something you'd find on a men's dress shirt, only updated in a rosy pink. Try it with a denim skirt and gladiator sandals, as Lynette's been doing, or to dress it up for work, pair it with a dark pencil skirt and heels.

Daily Dose

Dailyredbag_blog Delight.com is a new e-boutique that posts a new product every day at noon. The items that have gone live so far are uniformly tempting and cute: Senior fashion editor Laurie Trott wants this waterproof red floral tote, which is foldable, weighs next to nothing, and is intended as a reusable grocery bag. "I love this print," Laurie says, "it's a little Japanese, and a little '60s psychedelic." It's actually sold as a set of five bags in different-but-equally-appealing colors and patterns, which end up costing about $6 each.

Excellent, Affordable, Made-To-Order Home Accessories

Mobile_blogPortland-based company Frazier & Wing produces only two things—pillows and mobiles—but they do them both really, really well. Designer Heather Frazier turns magazine clippings into cheerful, floaty mobiles that from afar look like Technicolor wind chimes. Each piece is handmade, and they range from $75 to $175 depending on size, a steal considering they can take up to eight hours to make. Pillow_blogHer other specialty is handstitched pillows, and they're also pretty great: cream-colored cotton canvas embellished with silk-blend appliqués that form graphic, playfully sophisticated prints.

Typically Chic

Vanessabrunowedge_blogSome people have a personal aesthetic that's so sharply defined it becomes entirely, exquisitely, predictable. Around our offices, there are more than a few of these people, but my personal favorite is special sections director Liz Kiernan. She sticks to classic, clean-lined, easy-to-layer pieces that are Goldring_blogfeminine but never frilly. So her two most recent acquisitions came as no surprise: Vanessa Bruno's leather wedges are versatile and comfortable (two signature Liz mandates) but totally pulled-together. And this delicate gilded floral ring by St. Kilda, which she wears both on its own and stacked with a number of other thin gold bands, and which strikes the perfect balance between girly and modern.

Foolproof for Smoky Eyes

Urbandecay_blogSenior beauty editor Cristina Mueller is perpetually infatuated with the idea of a smoky eye. ("The dark, rocker-y, penciled-in look," she specifies. "I love the slapdash, sexy smudginess of it all.") But slapdash though this look appears, it isn't an easy one to get right: Lots of pencils she experimented with at first tended to smear and then look messy—and not sexy messy, just sloppy. Then she tried Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil and discovered perfection: It comes in a slew of deeply pigmented colors, goes on creamy and soft, doesn't smudge, and true to its name, lasts all day long.

New Wave Woven Leather

Leatherring_blogFashion news editor Jen Ford loves this leather button ring by Yarborough. "Woven leather is always a classic," she says, "but on a button-style ring it looks really fresh and unexpected." The soft tan leather feels coolly '70s and a touch masculine—sort of like you're wearing a cuff link—and makes a statement without being so dramatic it offsets everything else you're wearing.

A Great Summer Shoe

Sandalmatta_blog For summer sandals, creative director Andrea Linett loves the traditional Indian-style thongs from New York boutique Matta, which are handmade and come in both metallic gold and silver, giving them a slightly modern twist. Zoom in on the photo on their site and you'll notice teeny rows of braids and perforated circles that add the perfect amount of embellishment.

Know Where to Dig

Cachareldress_blog Edressme.com is a site known more for tabs on its homepage devoted to "Prom Dresses 2007" and "Tango Dance Dresses," but when associate fashion editor Noria Morales was trolling the site the other day she found a new tab: "Shop Paris Designers." She clicked and found a small but well-edited selection of pieces, like this sweetly sexy and perfectly summery Cacharel floral-print minidress, and other items by Manoush and Sonia/Sonia Rykiel.

Hot and Cold

Scoopscarf_blogThough the weather outside is getting just as stinky, hot, and humid as only summer in New York can, the conditions inside our offices are—as they are every summer—chilled to temperatures that feel positively arctic. Accessories assistant Becca Aronson has decided to fight the elements by leaving this Dianora Salviati scarf at her desk to keep her warm. It's made of linen and silk, definitely sheer and floaty, but surprisingly effective for keeping cozy—and so, so pretty. While it's neutral enough to wear with anything, the gold trim makes it that much more dressy, so it's great for transitioning for nights out too.

Another Standout Summer Dress

Mociun_dressFashion assistant Jenny Kang's version of the perfect summer dress—a topic we dwell on here at Lucky, I know, but it's an important one—is this crisp striped shift made of breezy, lightweight linen by Mociun. "The knot at the bust gives it an interesting, vaguely romantic twist," she says, "and the voluminous skirt is flattering on just about any body type." It can be procured from a very cool Web e-shop called Belkina, which specializes in green clothing and accessories.

Great and Exceedingly Wearable

Loeffler_blogEditorial assistant Alexandra Willinger is enviably tall (5'10") and tends to shy away from heels for reasons to do with comfort and fear of looking like a giant. She recently bought these Loeffler Randall Edie pumps though, which are exceptionally easy to walk in and not overly high of heel. In addition to which they're quite classic and totally meet at the intersection of practical and sexy.

Summer Sweatshirt Perfection

Sweatshirt_blogAt a shoot the other day creative director Andrea Linett turned up in a very thin (almost T-shirt-thin), vintage-looking sweatshirt that fit amazingly well (though this might sound impossible, it was loose and figure-hugging at the same time) and was the absolute perfect heather gray. Associate fashion editor Ann Brady was on hand, and as the shoot was over she ran off to American Apparel to buy one of her own. Then I saw it on Ann in the office yesterday, and now I have to get one myself—truly, this is a sweatshirt good enough to spark an office epidemic.

The Perfect Red

Nailtini_blogAssociate beauty editor Dawn Spinner has been obsessing over the idea of short, short nails with bright red polish. "It's as much '40s glam as it is '80s punk," she says, "and anyone can pull it off." She experimented with a slew of different shades before settling on her favorite: Bloody Mary by Nailtini. It's a true red—not too blue, not too orange—that looks great on every skin tone. Plus, the polish is really strong: Dawn's gone a full week with it on since her last manicure, without so much as a chip.

French and Flowery

Perfume_blogOur fashion news editor, Jen Ford, wrote me from Paris yesterday to tell me how much she loves her latest purchase: Jacques Garcia's Tuberose Room Spray. Not only does it smell exactly like the flower itself (unlike many reproductions of the scent, which are cloyingly and disappointingly sweet) but the bottle is downright gorgeous—a glamorous cross between goth and art nouveau. You and I can get it without a trip to France at luckyscent.com, a great source for perfumes and the like.

Packing Made Simple—And So, So Chic

Garmentbag_blogContributing editor Marissa Cooley is dying for this T. Anthony trifold garment bag: "It's more compact and ladylike than most garment bags, which seem more man-size," she says. "And it would make it so much easier to travel wrinkle-free." In addition to which, it's T. Anthony, which is just so glamorous.

Late-Night Shopping

Venacavadress_blogA few weeks ago, half manic at 3 AM in a fit of insomnia, I wound up ordering this Vena Cava dress on shopbop.com. I justified my purchase with the rationalization that it was the type of thing that was fancy enough to wear to a cocktail party or wedding, but not so fancy that I couldn't wear it to work. I've actually already tried it in all three contexts and have been pleased with the results. It fits amazingly well—flatteringly fitted but still comfortably loose—and is made of tissue-thin silk that is the ideal material for summer heat.

Wearable Art

Arttop_blogThough associate fashion editor Noria Morales loves modern art, the pieces at the top of her wish list are out of her (and most people's) price range. So she was pleased to discover this (relatively affordable) silk and linen blouse by Mint with an abstract brushstroke pattern. "The print reminds me of a Rothko," Noria says. And it's got plenty of pretty, feminine details to add to its appeal: a waist-flattering sash, pleating on the front and back, and a softly rounded neck.

A Year-Round Favorite

Chambraydress_blog Fashion news contributor Erin Wylie's recent obsession is this chambray baby-doll dress by A.P.C. The cut is cool and loose but not at all tent-like, according to Erin. "It's awesomely breezy," she says, "and is the type of thing I'd wear with gladiator sandals now, but that would look great with thick tights, ankle boots, and a cardigan in the fall."

June 15, 2007

Style and Comfort

Redshoe_blog Senior associate fashion editor Heather Summerville has been looking all over for a summery shoe that has some height, yet is still comfortable (and polished) enough to wear all day at the office and beyond. She found a pair of red slingbacks from Anthropologie with heels that are high but also wide enough to offer support. Plus, they're just so cute. "These have a subtle pinup vibe to them," Heather says, "and the little bird cutouts were impossible to resist."

Herbal Essential

Jurlique_blog The latest in staff editor Jennifer Romolini's skincare regimen is Jurlique's Herbal Recovery Gel. She's been using it in place of her regular moisturizer since the weather started heating up, as most creams can feel heavy once the humidity kicks in. "This is perfect for summer," she says, "it's cooling and lightweight, and absorbs right into your skin so you never feel the least bit oily."

Balancing Act

Shanghaitang_blog Though she's the first to admit it's a bit over the top, senior fashion editor Laurie Trott is really into this double knot handbag from Shanghai Tang. The combination of rugged denim and swingy black leather tassels feels wholly unexpected, and delivers a nice balance between casual and fancy. "It's definitely a statement piece," says Laurie, "so I'd pair this with something pretty simple to keep the look sophisticated."

New to the Web: Jumelle

Jumelle_blogJumelle, a shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, that stocks an impressive array of cool, hard-to-come-by independent labels from all over, recently went online, and we're already big fans of the site. European lines like Sweden's Whyred and Paris-based Isabel Marant and Sonia by Sonia Rykiel are well represented, along with stateside favorites like United Bamboo (whose bronze linen Amish top I'm very tempted to splurge on) and New Zealand's Karen Walker.

Summer Loving

Jcrewdress_blog A key component of market editor Meg Cuna's strategy for keeping cool this summer is this jumper dress from J.Crew. "The perfect cut and fabric to wear in the heat," she says, "it's so flowy and easy, and it's made of really sheer cotton in the prettiest raspberry color." Meg's already cultivated a series of scenarios in which she's going to wear it: at the beach, for after-work cocktails, and flea market shopping on a hot Sunday afternoon in the city.

Bikini Cool

Bikinishopbop_blogOur creative director, Andrea Linett, has been eyeing this bikini by Spanish label Jocomola de Sybilla: "There's something very sweet about this style," she says, "the cut reminds me of a little kid's suit." An alphabet print adds to its youthful, nostalgic appeal, but spaghetti straps and low-rise bottoms give it a grown-up twist.

A New Take on a Classic

Converse_blog"When it comes to sneakers," says accessories director Chris Frey,"the more no-frills and classic, the better." She's been a longtime fan of Converse for just that reason, and though she normally sticks to their neutral-colored canvas, this summer she's getting a little bit wild and supplementing her collection with a silver leather pair. "The metallic adds a bit of flash," she says. "They're perfect for dressing up skinny jeans and a smock top."

Staying Cool

Velvettank_blogFashion market director Anne Keane recently got back from a trip home to L.A. and made the rounds at Ron Herman while she was there. She picked up several pieces by Velvet that are exclusive to the store, including this Lora tank in a vivid black-and-white floral print. Adjustable straps and an elastic band create an easy, flattering fit, and since it's cut loose and made of silk, it's pretty perfect to wear in the summer heat.

Easy Clean

Lucitechair_blogIf you've ever owned plastic or Lucite furniture, it's possible you've been as confused as I am as to how to care for it. I have a white plastic Maui office chair at home, and despite my best efforts to keep it pristine, it's gotten a bit sullied as years go on. I've been afraid to use conventional cleaners, thinking they might leave surface stains and make things worse. Cleaner_blogThankfully, I just stumbled on this Plastic Cleaner Kit by Kartell: It's specifically made for the company's acrylic or polycarbonate pieces, but is mild enough to use on any kind—or brand—of plastic. It comes with a microfiber rag, and after a few spritzes and light buffing, my chair looked as good as new.

Orange Crush

Maylebag_blogIn lieu of an evening clutch, senior market editor Lynette Pone recently bought the tangerine leather Baby Billie Bag to carry with her at night. "The color's so right for summer," she says, "and when I'm out I never want to feel too done up—this gives even fancy outfits a casual touch."

Pretty in Pink

Lancome_blogArtist and fashion illustrator Julie Verhoeven collaborated with Lancôme on the packaging for a new limited-edition Juicy Tube lip gloss, Pink Muse, and the end result could not be more covetable. Beauty assistant Cat Marnell is obsessed: "The drawing's gorgeous, and the gloss itself is so, so pretty—a sheer baby pink with the faintest hint of lilac." According to our sources, it's already starting to sell out, so act sooner rather than later.

June 08, 2007

Very Versatile

Gapdress_blog"This is such a great summer staple," says fashion director Hope Greenberg of this sporty-chic cotton Gap dress. The stripes are neutral enough to pair with just about anything, whether that means flip-flops at the pool or wedges for a more evening-y look. And though it falls above the knee, it's not so short that you couldn't get away with wearing it to the office (or at least our office) with flats and a fitted jacket.

A Cool New Line, Store, and Site

Rodandress_blog In an admirably ambitious feat, designers Carol Rodan and Chris Griffith have just simultaneously not only debuted a new clothing line (called Rodan vs. Griffith) but opened their own store in L.A. and launched an e-commerce website. The line's pretty great—lots of no-frills, easy-to-wear separates Rodantank_blog_2in a similar vein to Steven Alan or A.P.C.—stuff you'll reach for every day. The flutter tulip dress made of sheer smoky chiffon has the prettiest feminine cut that gives it a vintage feel. And for something more weekendy, I love the breezy cotton racer tank too.

Mixed Metals

Ring_blog"Not only is this out of my budget, but I'm really not in the market for commitment rings of any sort!" swears fashion news contributor Erin Wylie. "Having said that, I still think this band by George Sawyer is pretty amazing." It's made with yellow, rose, and gray gold and is etched with copper in an intricate, organic pattern reminiscent of knots and rings found in wood. A little hippieish, unequivocally luxe, and totally one-of-a-kind.

Chance Encounter

Miguelina_blogOur creative director, Andrea Linett, was in Puerto Rico not long ago for a shoot and noticed a woman out shopping who had on the most beautiful white Mexican-style dress. The woman—and designer of the dress—turned out to be her friend, Miguelina, and she was wearing the Rani Shirt Dress, from her current collection. "It really looks like the perfect vintage Mexican dress," says Andrea, who ran out and got one as soon as she got home, "only more flatteringly cut and not as stiff either."

Perennially Chic

Brownbag1_blogSenior accessories editor Dawn Gabbriellini has a thing for simple brown handbags: "I look for classic styles that are going to last me through the seasons," she explains," and brown feels less business-y than black and is easier to dress down or up." She's been shopping for another to add to her collection, Brownbag2_blog and her two current favorites are Lauren Merkin's distressed lambskin bag, which she loves for its clean, pocketbook shape and subtly '70s-ish braided handle, and this luxe holds-everything tote in a deep espresso color from Laurence.

Little Birdie

Birdvase_blog_2 There's something very sweet and funny about this handmade bird vase. Its delicate beak and chubby silhouette mimic those of a baby chick, but in all-white, glossy ceramic it comes across as more modern than cutesy. It's the perfect size to house a single blossom or teeny cluster of flowers, and the overall aesthetic is cool and designy yet not too serious (which I'm always a sucker for).

June 05, 2007

Perfect to a Tee

Urban_blogSenior fashion editor Laurie Trott met a friend for dinner last week who had on what Laurie decided was the perfect T-shirt dress. Like many a T-shirt dress, it doesn't look like much until you try it on, but here are all the reasons she gave me to justify her fixation: It's made of light, sheer (but not see-through) cotton; is flatteringly cut (and just sexy enough), with a deep V-neck and cap sleeves; and is so simple and easy to wear it's downright brilliant. Even better, it's only $48 and comes in tons of different colors.

Tried and Trusted

Nelsons_blogExecutive editor Meredith Kahn Rollins has discovered an incredible zit-fighting gel that happens to be all-natural too. It's made by a British-based company called Nelsons that's been turning out homeopathic products since the 1800s. "This stuff really dries up spots overnight," she says. "And I love that I don't have to slather my face with chemicals."

The Ultimate Ballet Flat

Hollywould_blogEditor-in-chief Kim France, who wears flats pretty much daily, says the "Hepburn" by Hollywould is the hands-down best when it comes to a ballet-style shoe. Given that she has (literally) seen and tried them all, I'd take her word for it: "They really are the perfect approximation of that classic Audrey Hepburn shape," she says; "The toe is a little squarish so they're not too too ballerina-y." It's the blunt front and high vamp that make all the difference; they're a slightly cooler version of a style that can err on the side of prissy. Plus, the rubber bottoms make them that much more durable than most ballet flats. Kim's got them in black and is wearing them to death already. Red's next on her list for summer and I'm thinking of following suit.

Better Hair, Fast

Terax_blogBeauty assistant Cat Marnell recently declared Terax the most amazing conditioner in the world, and during her relatively brief tenure in beauty she's already tried hundreds. Cat's got long, thick, highlighted hair that tangles easily and constantly—or, at least, did before she started using just a dollop of this stuff with every wash. "It dissolves the knots instantly," she says, "without me even having to work them out with my fingers in the shower."
