The Ponte Vecchio bridge has been home to fine jewelry shops since the Medici family ruled Florence in the Middle Ages. (A bit of history: Butchers were the previous tenants on the Ponte Vecchio, but the Medicis didn't like the smell-they had to cross the bridge to get to their palace-so they decreed that jewelers take their place.) You can still find loads of classic pieces here, like rosette earrings (visit U. Gherardi), coral horn-pendant necklaces (at Fantoni), and cameos (go to Piero Fallaci).
