This rambling boutique, located in Maui's quintessential hippie town, Paia, offers everything from bright, stretchy mesh tees to "forkchops," a bizarre hybrid of fork and chopstick. The petite purses that shop co-owner Patti Pottorff makes from vintage silk kimono fabric are all one-of-a-kind and well worth the 50 bucks.

Finders Keepers

What this new- and antique-furniture warehouse lacks in ambience, it more than makes up for in its sheer volume. You'll find everything from '40s Hawaiian bamboo love seats to bright, curvy '60s plastic chairs spread out on the massive sales floor. Check out the more extravagant pieces, like the 19th-century mahogany bed made for Chinese royalty: They're fun to just ogle. Plus, there is this additional incentive to buy: The shop gladly ships your purchases back to the mainland.

Holiday & Co.

Maui's scenic upcountry—the hilly area that constitutes the center of the island—is scattered with rolling pineapple fields and cute boutiques. Holiday & Co., located in an old cowboy town called Makawao, is arguably the best. The pistachio-painted space carries everything from Seven cords to Eric Javits leather berets to comfy yoga separates by Om Girl.

Island Soap & Candle Works

For the most complete selection of this Maui-based company's soaps, stop by their factory store where employees whip up the bars right in front of customers and dry them on giant wooden racks. About 30 different scents are available, like key-lime poppy seed, and Hawaiian pineapple, with new versions constantly being introduced. One bar, called Hawaiian Sea, contains two types of highly exfoliating local seaweed.

Lisa's Beauty Supply & Salon

More "beauty supply" than "salon," this well-organized shop is a veritable library of haircare products. Nearly every high-end brand is available here, from Mop to Rusk to Bedhead to Terax. A smattering of hair accessories, like tortoise Headgames barrettes, is also up for grabs.

Hawaii suffers from a glut of swimwear shops, but this Paia spot stands out from the rest. Its bamboo-and-straw-decorated interior makes you feel like you're shopping in a retro tiki hut; the humongous selection of bikinis and tanks is actually nontacky, a rarity in the islands.

On Saturday mornings from 6 AM until noon, both locals and tourists swarm this lively flea market. Pass up the predictable sarongs and shell necklaces and zero in on the real bargains, like orchids, funky aloha-print wallets, and beach totes woven from palm leaves.

The Mercantile

Illuminated paper stars dangle from the rafters in this tin-roofed boutique, which has the feel of an old barn. Feminine seems to be the theme here, with floral-print dresses by Betsey Johnson, velvet-trimmed Awake by Oz tees, and beautifully wrapped soaps by Fresh. It's also the only place in the state to find Kiehl's products.

Nuage Bleu

If we had to visit only one shop on Maui, this would be it. Nuage Bleu's location on the main drag in Paia makes it easy to find, and the roster of labels is irresistible. Susana Monaco, Earl, Seven, Lafco, Theory, Hervé Chapelier bags, and Frankie B. mix with local designers like Sigal, whose side-tie leather pants provide an outstanding fit.

Paia Trading Co.

This 25-year-old antiques shop predates all other boutiques in Paia. The past quarter century has given proprietor Rose Blaker ample time to compile a great (and unusual) selection of collectibles. A red pleather '50s-era Hawaiian stewardess luggage set is in mint condition and worth the $100 price tag; a green droopy-faced-dog cookie jar is a steal at $35.
