nashville shopping guide

off the beaten path, but not to be missed

If you want to get away from strip malls and check out some great locally owned shops, stop here first.

Off Fifth-Saks Fifth Avenue

We were astounded by the selection at this Off 5th. Examples of the incredible bargains: Katayone Adeli jeans at the superclearance price of $38, and a Fendi baguette for $199. We could go on and tell you about the stellar deals on Marc by Marc Jacobs, but unfortunately there's not enough space.

Southern Thrift

Local secondhand scavengers love this thrift shop for its great deals. The prices are right—the average tag was $2 on our visit—which means it's easy to score a pile of quality used goods for pocket change. We left with a retro silk blouse for $1 and a flight bag for $3.

Curious Heart Emporium

Near the Tennessee State Fairgrounds (don't miss the flea market there on the fourth weekend of every month), this gift shop is a worthwhile destination not only because it has a seven-foot-tall spaceship on display in the front yard, but also for its ample selection of well-priced knickknacks. Look for boomerang-shaped plates with mod designs ($25) and strings of paper lights ($15).

Katy K Designs Ranch Dressing

Part vintage store, part '50s kitsch shop, this winding bungalow encourages serious browsing. Wander around and discover sexy bandanna-print skirts by owner Katy K ($90), and belt buckles with hokey sayings like pig farmers bring home the bacon ($15). Ask to see the closet of old rhinestone-heavy suits by the original Western designer, Nudie ($1,000 and up).

Phonoluxe Records

Locals favor this spot for its good prices (CDs can be had for $2 to $10) and broad array of genres (everything from ambient to zydeco). If you have a question, don't hesitate to ask any of the salespeople—all of whom have a frighteningly high level of music knowledge.

A selection of vendors displays new and vintage furniture and decor items at this rambling shop. Highbrow Furniture offers mod chairs by the likes of Frank Gehry and Vernor Panton, while the Pre to Post Modern section carries Lucite bangle bracelets ($10) and the like.
