U.N. Gift Centre

Look past the "I Love New York" postcards and snow globes, and behold a dizzying array of unusual goods gathered from far-flung corners of the planet. Find beaded Masai cuffs, pretty purple Czech glassware, colorful woven baskets from Ethiopia, hammered Moroccan tables, inlaid mother-of-pearl boxes from Egypt, and Native American tapestries.

Astro Gallery of Gems

This store is full of stunningly unusual specimens that make for excellent bookends and table adornments—chunky rock crystals, fossilized six-inch-long shark teeth, and slabs of petrified wood. There are loads of lovely things to wear, too, like strands of carnelian stones and rare Indian turquoise beads, oversize moonstone rings, and bracelets flecked with chunks of amber.

H&M

This particular outpost is our favorite of the famed Swedish chain: The lines are shorter, and the lofty layout is the least claustrophobic.

Henri Bendel

Though it's technically a department store, Bendel has always had the intimate feel of a boutique: There are many winding staircases, tiny nooks, and quiet areas in which to find yourself browsing for a bottle of obscure French perfume. 712 Fifth Ave. (at 56th St.), 800-H-BENDEL, henribendel.com

Intermix

Not only does this Intermix location have the most diverse, upscale range of labels and a modern, streamlined look, it's also the largest.

J.Crew

It's tough to pick the best J.Crew in town, but after much research, we concluded that this Rockefeller Center space, with its slate floors and mansion-like refinement, is the most elegant and well stocked.

Jimmy Choo

This British footwear line made its name turning out razor-sharp stiletto styles but now offers shoes of all types (and heel heights). Its bags are a hit—particularly the oversize "Ramona" handbag.
