New York Shopping Guide
Our list of the most undeniably unmissable spots.
The Top 100 Boutiques in New York
Eva Gentry Consignment
Launched by the owners of local stalwart Eva Gentry (see No. 38), this sun-drenched storefront is where the neighborhood's poshest hipster ladies unload their pristine, last-season Chanel jackets and never-worn Balenciaga pencil skirts. 371 Atlantic Ave. BOERUM HILL 718-522-3522
Factoriem
Marked by a small neon sign and a jumble of oversize spools of thread, Factoriem operates a bit like a co-op for a handful of nascent labels. Exotically patterned, intricately tailored dresses and tops from Wakana Koike's line Mew (she used to design prints for Tsumori Chisato) and totes blanketed in silver sequins by JF and Son are standouts. 179 Orchard St. LES 212-673-3913
Stuart & Wright
Launched by two former employees of Steven Alan (see Nolita/SoHo/Tribeca map), this warm, welcoming spot offers a masterful edit of quietly elegant pieces, from Rachel Comey to Vena Cava
85 Lafayette Ave. (between S. Portland Ave and S. Elliott Pl.), 718-797-0011, stuartandwright.com

Ten Thousand Things
Open a nondescript door off the Meatpacking District's main drag and a narrow passageway empties into a cavernous and serene expanse of a store, awash with pieces of driftwood and slate gray brick floors. Besides Ten Thousand Things' own achingly gorgeous collection of delicately strung necklaces, the store carries jewelry by designers like Annette Ferdinandsen and Cara Croninger. 423 W. 14th St. MEATPACKING DISTRICT 212‑352-1333
Zoë
The original Zoë, in Princeton, New Jersey, takes up an entire city block, and Dumbo's Zoë is just as ambitious in scope. In keeping with the feel of the neighborhood, it occupies an all-gray, industrial-toned loft; and in keeping with its position as a mini department store, each label gets its own portion of rack, whether it's Gary Graham, Lanvin, or Helmut Lang. 68 Washington St. DUMBO 718-237-4002, shopzoeonline.com
Legacy
One of those unerringly great boutiques that have been around forever (since 1978!), Legacy debuted in Soho before also arriving on Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue. Owner Rita Brookoff arranges inspiring new labels next to an impeccably chosen lineup of vintage gowns and jackets (including pieces from marquee names like Lanvin and YSL). The two house collections—made from vintage fabrics—are worth checking out as well. 109 Thompson St. SOHO 212-966-4827; 362 Atlantic Ave. BOERUM HILL 718-403-0090, legacy-nyc.com
Loopy Mango
When Waejong
Kim and Anna Pulvermakher set about naming their store, they decided on
Loopy Mango, since they both like the fruit and both crochet (and even
cowrote a book on the subject). That sort of oddball-yet-straightforward thinking sums up the shop's feel. It's an anything-goes universe where disparate aesthetics collide—fancy Gryphon dresses and hippieish totes, for example—but
it's fun, and it works. 117 Front St. DUMBO 718-858-5930, loopymango.com
Michele Varian
Though it's technically in busy Soho, the slip of Crosby Street where Michele Varian's eight-year-old store lives is always calm and quiet. Beyond her own range of handworked throw pillows, she stocks an exquisite universe of meticulously chosen home accessories and jewelry. Ornate gold champagne flutes rest alongside jasmine-blossom-adorned rings and elaborately etched glass tumblers, making this one of the best gift resources in the city. 35 Crosby St. SOHO 212-226-1076, michelevarian.com
A&G Merch
The vision of David Alhadeff, owner of the pioneering design shop The Future Perfect (see No. 42), and his friend Jill Goldhand, A&G Merch sprang from a desire to create an affordable general-store-like experience for Williamsburg. Apartment-appropriate decor, like toadstool-shaped ottomans and compact couches, is on offer, along with a range of quirky housewarming gifts, such as mosaic-patterned nesting bowls and hand towels stamped with images of King Louis XIV. 111 N. Sixth St. WILLIAMSBURG 718-388-1779, aandgmerch.com
Blue Tree
Helmed by '80s teen star Phoebe Cates, this Upper East Side spot fills a whippet-thin, teetering townhouse, which feels like it is inhabited by a wacky-but-chic grande dame. The case of delicate jewelry near the front is particularly strong, while the upstairs is replete with Sophie D'Hoore ballet flats and Antipast cashmere dresses. 1283 Madison Ave. UES 212-369-2583, bluetreenyc.com
