MAC

An acronym for Modern Appealing Clothing, this Hayes Valley stalwart (it opened its doors in 1980) has lost none of its edge. Landscaped with hundreds of plants, it reads like a lush botanical garden—an appropriately exotic backdrop for the avant-garde Tsumori Chisato dresses and bejeweled bug pins by Liberty, along with a scattering of options from local designers such as Dema and Ryan Roberts.

Nida

Nida's original location debuted in Italy more than 50 years ago, and the same successful formula is evident in the Bay Area branch, which has been around since '95. Owner Kiko Giobbio stockpiles highly sought-after European lines—Vanessa Bruno, Paul & Joe, Notify, Les Prairies de Paris—and then offers a deeper selection of each of them than you'll find anywhere else in the States.

The Perish Trust

After storage became an issue for prop stylist Rod Hipskind and photographer Kelly Ishikawa, they determined they could keep collecting flea market curios if they started selling off the rest of their loot. This brand-new spot is a moodily gorgeous showcase for their treasure-divining ability—plus, almost nothing tops $100.

Polanco

At first glance, Polanco looks like it's a gallery for Mexican art, but closer inspection yields several cases of lushly exquisite jewelry from Latin America, like seed-pearl-studded antique chandelier earrings and new skull-shaped beads strung on silk.

Rare Device

Co-owner Rena Tom's original venture occupied a frustratingly tiny storefront in Brooklyn, but a late 2007 relocation to San Francisco ensured much more spacious digs. There's a truly great array of Karin Eriksson's delicate ceramics, Lena Corwin's coffee table books, and Three Sheets to the Wind's intricately patterned pillows.

The focal point shifts constantly at this design shop (past themes have included Woodland and Modern Folk). The motif now is Picnic, which means that the items—ranging from beautifully modern serving bowls to birthday candles modeled after sailors—are all arranged on a maze-like grid of waist-high green shrubbery.
