San Francisco city guide

Philanthropist

Employing one of the most innovative retail concepts we've yet to see (100 percent of all profits go directly to a list of area charities), this enormous designer-laden boutique is lavishly outfitted with metallic floral wallpaper, gigantic chandeliers, and a wine bar.

Sample Angel

Just over a year old, this discount boutique not only gives huge breaks on the designers it carries (Catherine Malandrino, Joe's Jeans, etc.), but it also donates 20 percent of sales to local nonprofits.

Pacific Heights & Western Addition

Lucky's favorite stores in San Francisco's Pacific Heights/Western Addition neighborhood!

Clary Sage Organics

A recent addition to Fillmore Street, this is a lofty haven for organic beauty products and an on-point cache of clothes from progressively tailored sustainable collections such as Loomstate and Linda Loudermilk.
2241 Fillmore St., 877-272-4308

Elizabeth Charles

Just as at the New York original, the focus of this boutique is Australian designers. Martin Grant jackets float alongside slick Anna Thomas blazers and floral-print Thurley dresses on the airy racks of this quietly upscale locale.

Erica Tanov

One of the area's most beloved designers, Tanov works a rich bohemian sensibility into her silk dresses and chunky sweaters better than almost anyone. Her whole collection is on display at her gilded lair, but there are also embroidered socks, rain boots, and delicate jewelry by Megan Park.

Gimme Shoes

As the name suggests, this duo of shops deals exclusively in footwear, hitting an impressive range of prices and styles. There are psychedelic Dries Van Noten heels alongside lace-up booties from Chie Mihara.
2358 Fillmore St., 415-441-3040

Harputs Market

While Harputs Market didn't open until 2004, its adjacent sneaker shop, Harputs, opened in the '70s, making it the oldest of its kind in the States. Lodged in a former theater, dotted with large-scale Ansel Adams prints, and featuring a fur hammock, Harputs Market feels more like an art gallery/clubhouse than a store. But it's packed with things to wear, like carefully constructed shifts from Ann-Sofie Back, Maison Martin Margiela boots, and the house line of simple dresses.

My Roommate's Closet

This shop looks exactly like a fancy boutique, except that everything on the racks is at least 50 percent off—all the time. A recent search unearthed Lela Rose dresses and Rory Beca blouses.
3044 Fillmore St., 415-447-7703; 1366 N. Main St., Walnut Creek, 925-280-8400

Nest

A global bazaar–inspired store can be difficult to pull off without creating an overly exuberant, overly stimulating fiasco, but it's masterfully executed at Nest. Even those who stridently embrace minimalism will discover plenty to marvel at, from the Patch NYC ink-drawing pillows to the suzani coverlets and striking gold jewelry.
