New People
Seiji Horibuchi, founder of Viz Media—the largest distributor of English-translated anime and manga in America—spent seven years dreaming up a retail venture that would reflect Japan's art and fashion scene. The mind-bogglingly cool result is New People, a four-story theater/department store/cafĂ©/gallery. Every few months there is a fresh rotation of artists and here-and-only-here labels that pop up in their own personally decorated spaces. Plus, an entire floor is given over to traditional paper crafts, art books, and tech-y housewares.

Doe
Styled as a mini department store (it's the size of a closet but carries everything from beauty products to clothing to stationery and home goods), Doe espouses an adorable slightly French and slightly handmade sensibility.

Duchess
Located just across the bay in a residential suburb, this unabashedly feminine boutique has an impressive—and deep—lineup of some of our favorite brands. Expect AKA New York cardigans, J Brand jeans, and Inhabit sweaters.

Eco Citizen
This bright, sparsely furnished space in San Francisco's Russian Hill neighborhood has a Zen, gallery-ish quality—and the sleek aesthetic extends to the well-chosen inventory. We particularly loved John Patrick Organic's paperbag pants and Toms Cordones lace-ups.

Elizabeth Charles
Just as at the New York original, the focus of this boutique is Australian designers. Martin Grant jackets float alongside slick Anna Thomas blazers and floral-print Thurley dresses on the airy racks of this quietly upscale locale.

Erica Tanov
One of the area's most beloved designers, Tanov works a rich bohemian sensibility into her silk dresses and chunky sweaters better than almost anyone. Her whole collection is on display at her gilded lair, but there are also embroidered socks, rain boots, and delicate jewelry by Megan Park.
