Local Designer: Marisa Swystun

This up-and-comer makes kimonos for the modern age.

Twenty-nine-year-old Marisa Swystun's entire new line of flattering silk tops and dresses is stunning, but we're particularly taken with her drapey, kimono-inspired pieces. "They are easy to put on over anything and to assimilate into your wardrobe," she says. "I like flowy, '70s clothes, and I have a sporty frame, so they make me feel more feminine." The handpainted tops, in striking sheer black-and-white prints, or rich mustard yellows and reds, take on a nice shape when paired with a rockerish brass belt.

Prices range from $100 to $700; available on marisaswystun.com
