Portobello Road Market

There's always a market cropping up in town—but none can hold a candle to the juggernaut at Portobello Road, which just gets better with age. Our game plan is to start early and hit the vintage-clothing vendors under the Westway overpass (Friday and Saturday mornings), then stroll down Portobello toward Notting Hill Gate with a cup of Earl Grey in hand, checking out the vintage jewelry stalls and antique dealers along the way (Saturdays only).Portobello Road between Pembridge Road and Golborne Road. Selfridges

We could go on for hours about how much we love this department store. It gobbles up one big block of prime West End real estate, and you'll want to investigate every square inch: There are mini shops for nearly every English chain; a stunning accessories department (including bags made exclusively for Selfridges by Marc Jacobs and YSL); the largest Vanessa Bruno in-store boutique in Europe; and a basement-level lifestyle area rife with Missoni linens and Penhaligon's soaps. Plus: Selfridges often beats London's hippest shops when it comes to stocking emerging names.

The Shop at Bluebird

Headed up by the couple behind the hugely successful Jigsaw clothing brand, this retail entry, housed in a former Sainsbury's grocery store, is unmissable. We stood slack-jawed from the instant we entered the warehouse-like, white-tiled space. There's a gigantic book department brimming with arty volumes, a tech area offering wonders like a backyard swing that emits an increasingly louder laughing sound the higher you go, and tons of offbeat clothing and accessories, including Madame A Paris dresses, Michel Vivien shoes, and Hussein Chalayan jackets.

Start

Start is bigger and better than ever. Co-owner Brix Smith-Start is a pioneer in an arena that has gone from gritty to gentrified over the past decade, and she's long been a champion of upscale indie labels; she continues the trend by offering Roksanda Ilincic pouf jackets, Alice McCall trapeze tops, and Karen Walker hourglass-shaped chiffon dresses.

Topshop

Though for the past couple of years its greatness has been fluctuating from season to season, we're currently loving what's happening at this gigantic, trend-nailing clothing chain—specifically, its seasonal collaborations with underground Brit labels (currently Preen and Emma Cook) and the happy fact that they have an incredible-fitting wide-legged jean style called the "M Jean."
