Best New Shopping Cities
Washington, D.C.
Thanks to new spots flush with hip housewares, witty gifts, and on-trend clothing, style in the District is no longer informed just by power suits and politics.
1
Après Peau
Tina Alster, dermatologist of choice for Washington's elite, opened this gorgeously spare boutique in her office's ground floor. French for "after skin," the shop is frequented by clients looking to nab a post-treatment pick-me-up—be it a Kotur clutch or Miller et Bertaux perfume.

2
Circle Boutique
Relocated from Dupont Circle, this low-key boutique features a cache of fledgling refined lines (Lover, Valentine, Borne), displayed in an artfully raw interior, with unfinished plywood fixtures and purposely exposed wiring.

Cusp
The D.C. branch of Neiman Marcus' twentysomething-targeted Cusp chain is our favorite, with its dressed-down cinder-block construction and industrial-tree-house decor. Garments from Manoush, Dosty, and Karta are arranged on outcroppings of recycled wood scraps, and shoppers are encouraged to lounge
on a hodgepodge of offbeat furniture.

Hu's Shoes
A vibe of understated elegance defines this mellow footwear emporium. Simply adorned with Chinese wedding-bed panels and an antique altar-turned-register area, the less-is-more atmosphere provides an ideal setting for shoes by Repetto, Lanvin, and Martin Margiela.

Muléh
An importer of high-end Southeast Asian furniture, this spot also sells clothing, though you'd never know it from the street: The spot-on choices from Zero Maria Cornejo, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Le Full are obscured on racks in the rear of the warehouse-like space.

RCKNDY
Situated in a former pill-making factory, this mod home goods spot is part of the renaissance that's rejuvenating the once-blighted U Street corridor. Designed around a candy theme—jars of penny sweets are displayed behind the register and the walls are painted sherbet hues—the shop promotes the work of Areaware, Blu Dot, and Suck UK.

Redeem
Lori Parkerson, a former DJ for XM Satellite Radio, has stayed true to her roots and stocked her brightly muraled store with versatile pieces that easily transition from dinner to a rock show, like slim-cut Corpus jeans, chic Anzevino & Florence hoodies, and army green Religion pencil skirts.

Relish
Narrow, cobblestoned Cady's Alley feels more bohemian Paris than preppy Georgetown, which seems to perfectly suit this European-influenced shop, with its carriage-house-style environs and roster of covetable continental labels: Dries
Van Noten, Marni, Jil Sander.

Urban Chic
Now with three locations—and more to come—this fast-expanding chainlet is a certified local favorite. Our preferred outpost is the original, with its mix of Dolan dresses, Dallin Chase tops, and Grey Ant trousers.

Wink
Tucked in a subterranean space below bustling M Street, this is a reliable source for clothing that suits both high-powered Beltway workdays (MK2K cardigans, Development by Erica Davies sheaths, Geren Ford blouses) and relaxed weekends (Grace Sun sweaters, Dream Society tunics).
