Almost Famous

Exactly what makes French style so superlative has been the subject of much debate, but it has something to do with the way Parisians zero in on pieces that are cool and flattering. And boutiques like Almost Famous are where they find them: Only a handful of lines are on offer (Isabel Marant, See by Chloé ), but it's an extensive selection, with the most wearable picks from each.

Et Vous Stock

This huge outlet offers Et Vous' much-loved separates (see 1st arrondissement) at 70 percent off.

Kokon to Zai

This offshoot of the London original is the place to go for super-progressive labels like Henrik Vibskov and Vivienne Westwood, all presented in an acid-trip-ish environment. Don't miss the spiral stone staircase, which leads to a tomb-like basement packed with even more standouts, such as black T-shirt dresses with puff-painted collars.

Paul & Joe

It's funny that this well-loved company—named for founder Sophie Albou's two sons—was originally created as a men's brand, because now it's synonymous with exuberantly feminine items like tassel-adorned booties and dainty floral tops. There are eight branches in the city, but we prefer the rue É tienne Marcel shop, since it also contains the more-affordable diffusion line, Paul & Joe Sister.

58m

Mother-daughter duo Marion and Sophie Rioufol's two-year-old shoe salon—outfitted with a massive yellow ottoman, a beaded African couch, and two stuffed peacocks—teems with exquisite accessories. French-based collections like Jamin Puech's richly beaded pouches and Michel Vivien's satin peep-toes are highlights, along with picks from Lanvin and Comme des Garçons.

Repetto

Home to the first kidskin dance shoe, created in 1947 when Rose Repetto stitched two women's gloves together, this old-world company now occupies a glamorous salon near the Opé ra. Ballet flats with pavement-ready soles are an enormous business here—and available in everything from red suede to glittery teal—along with patent jazz shoes and tango heels. The best part: You can watch all the young Parisian dancers trying on their pointe shoes.

Room Service

Former stylist Pascale Bertea's recent addition to the bustling Les Halles shopping district offers a spot-on, bohemian mix of vintage and contemporary items. A giant worn worktable sits in the middle of the store, where Bertea breathes new life into antique pieces by adding crocheted collars, paillettes, and military patches. Almost every item in the store adheres to a beautiful sepia-toned palette. There are loads of cream tunics and lace blouses.
