Agnès B.
Agnès Troublé, who started Agnès B., left her job as a magazine editor to begin designing more than 30 years ago. The original location of this globally recognized fashion brand is still the city's best. It's in an old, much-expanded former butcher shop on rue du Jour and offers the complete collection of gamine-esque sharp dress shirts, cashmere sweaters, and slim pants. There are also adjacent stores for men and babies. Biggest location:

Almost Famous
Exactly what makes French style so superlative has been the subject of much debate, but it has something to do with the way Parisians zero in on pieces that are cool and flattering. And boutiques like Almost Famous are where they find them: Only a handful of lines are on offer (Isabel Marant, See by Chloé ), but it's an extensive selection, with the most wearable picks from each.

Antik Batik
When former Crazy Horse dancer Gabrielle Cortese opened the first of her Antik Batik stores 16 years ago, she was one of the earliest designers to work exotic, beachy fabrics and embellishments into citified shapes. The sequin-trimmed tunics call to mind the most idyllic vacation ever, but there are silk tie-neck blouses and slouchy trousers for work, too. Biggest location:

Astier de Villatte
Stepping into this ceramics shop feels a bit like entering a 16th-century monastery: It's dimly lit, hushed, and lined with dark wood cabinets, densely stacked with the gorgeously imperfect, white glazed pottery for which the store is known. There are also gold serving sets, scented soaps, and eccentric curios like sweater-wearing porcelain bulldogs.

Atypyk
This out-of-the-way spot doubles as a sun-drenched studio for Ivan Duval and Jean Sebastien Ides, who sprang onto the design scene 10 years ago with a range of cleverly conceived home items. A seemingly broken ceramic piggy bank is actually a puzzle, and a sisal mat is cut in the shape of an old-school bearskin rug.

Balenciaga
Even if you can't afford a Balenciaga gown, visiting one of the futuristic, dreamscape-like boutiques is akin to taking in a museum: For spring/summer 2009, Nicholas Ghesquière is re-creating 26 iconic pieces from Cristobal Balenciaga's archives (1932—1967), which are all available at the Paris flagship.
