Azalea

A small storefront belies the fact that Azalea is not only gigantic—but also houses an in-store spa. It's a long-standing establishment and a one-stop destination for everything from denim (there's a huge wall of it) to Comme des Garçons tops and Devotte boots.

Dish

A pioneer in the revitalized Hayes Valley—now one of the city's best shopping districts—Dish emphasizes pared-down labels with lasting appeal. The industrial-inflected interior is the ideal streamlined backdrop for lines like Alexander Wang, Sir, and Loeffler Randall.

Doe

Styled as a mini department store (it's the size of a closet but carries everything from beauty products to clothing to stationery and home goods), Doe espouses an adorable slightly French and slightly handmade aesthetic.

Gimme Shoes

As the name suggests, this duo of shops deals exclusively in footwear, hitting an impressive range of prices and styles. There are psychedelic Dries Van Noten heels alongside lace-up booties from Chie Mihara.

M.A.C.

An acronym for Modern Appealing Clothing, this Hayes Valley stalwart (it opened its doors in 1980) has lost none of its edge. Landscaped with hundreds of plants, it reads like a lush botanical garden—an appropriately exotic backdrop for the avant-garde Tsumori Chisato dresses and bejeweled bug pins by Liberty, along with a scattering of options from local designers such as Dema and Ryan Roberts.

Nida

Nida's original location debuted in Italy more than 50 years ago, and the same successful formula is evident in the Bay Area branch, which has been around since '95. Owner Kiko Giobbio stockpiles highly sought-after European lines—Vanessa Bruno, Paul & Joe, Notify, Les Prairies de Paris—and then offers a deeper selection of each of them than you'll find anywhere else in the States.
