does this outfit work?

When we met up with Alia Bengana—subject of the "Does this Outfit Work?" feature in our March issue—the 31-year-old architect was feeling ambivalent about the clothes she's pictured in here. Can one pull off head-to-toe brown?

Not so easily, we told her. It's a far better idea to throw in different variations on the same color, so we kept the T-shirt and cardigan but swapped out her skirt for a patterned one with a similar shape but in a lighter shade. "I thought that sticking to the same color from top to bottom would be slimming, but in fact this skirt shows off my waist much better," said Bengana.

Next, we lost the tights, which were cute but distracting, and moved on to the boots. Instead of the deep brown ones that she was wearing—again, too matchy—we opted for ones with more of a light, springtime feel. "The new look is so feminine," said Begana. "I've always wanted to master the way to dress comfortably but look womanly at the same time, and we've definitely accomplished that here!"
