May 2007: Does This Outfit Work?

High school teacher Tova Sacks, 27—the subject of the "Does This Outfit Work?" feature in our May issue—came to us with a question: "I like the feel of all these pieces, but are the top and boots too heavy to wear with shorts?"

Her skinny denim shorts show off her legs, but we agreed that she needed to lighten up the other pieces, so we replaced her blouse with a swingy, deep mauve peasant top. She loved its crochet detailing around the neckline and the lightweight, flowy fabric. "Just the change in color makes a big difference. This feels much softer," said Sacks.

Next, we swapped her knee-high boots for a pair of strappy leather wedge sandals: "I originally picked these boots because they were so comfortable, but wedges are just as walkable and a lot sexier," she said, adding that overall, she thinks the outfit is "a great combination. Now I don't feel like I'm hiding under my clothes!"
