Laura Wilhite, the subject of September's "Does This Outfit Work?" story, loves the look of pleated skirts and knee-high boots—but wanted to know how to keep them from looking too much like a school uniform. Here's what we did:

• Replaced her mid-thigh skirt with a slightly modified kilt, with subtle buckle details and a soft all-around pleat, so the effect is more sophisticate than schoolgirl.

• Added opaque black tights to create a more streamlined, professional look.

"With this kind of skirt, it's best to err on the conservative side. A super-short style can look really junior-ish," says our senior fashion editor, Laurie Trott. "Also, color is an important factor. A more solid palette and a less busy pattern give this outfit the grown-up feel it needs."

Laura's reaction: "I love this. Now, especially with the tights, it feels more work-appropriate."
