does this outfit work?

March 2008: Mariana Rittenhouse
March 2008

NYU student Mariana Rittenhouse, the subject of our March "Does This Outfit Work" story, wanted to make her staple look (skinny denim, layered tops) slightly more polished. Here's how we did it:

• Layered a waist-length top over a tank that hits at the thigh, creating a longer, more flattering silhouette.

• Added a sequin-trimmed knit vest as a third layer.

"The snug, midriff-baring top made her look kind of junior," says fashion news director Jen Ford. "We used roomier layers so the overall result is still relaxed and a little more edgy, and then we added an embellished vest as a cool but not-too-fussy touch."

Mariana's reaction: "This feels much more age-appropriate. I love the soft colors—and the dressed-up vest means I can go easily from class to an evening out."
