First Look: Prada Fall 2013

This afternoon, thanks to the joys of livestreaming technology, everyone on Lucky's web team had a front row seat for Prada's runway show in Milan. Miuccia Prada's clothes can be head-scratching for sure—remember Spring 2011's monkey prints and Fall 2011's faux fur swim caps?—but this season, there was an undeniable femininity in the collection, the likes of which we haven't really seen since Spring 2012's pastel-packed ode to classic cars. That happens to be my favorite Prada collection to date, but some of these pieces came close.

Against a backdrop of alley cats on the prowl, Miuccia sent out tightly-belted coats that flared out at the hips, often trimmed with thick bands of fluffy fur at the cuffs. Like at so many other shows so far this season, fur was everywhere—shown in classic coat form over filmy, sheer slips or bright leather skirts and accenting sleeves. There were a handful of looks in pale-colored gingham—not traditionally an autumn pattern, but it looked interesting against all that mink and croc. Also visually intriguing? The flouncy contrast panels added to one side of dresses and skirts for an asymmetrical touch.

In keeping with Prada's M.O., the accessories didn't disappoint; Miuccia showed thick rubber-soled platform sandals finished with bondage-like buckles and roomy, half-moon-shaped totes big enough to use as overnight bags and crafted from exotic skins. As for the slightly-unbuttoned cardigans layered beneath sleeveless dresses? That's a styling trick I'll definitely be trying myself.
