While philanthropic fashion brands are nothing new—think Warby Parker's "Buy a Pair, Give a Pair" policy and TOMS' "One for One" mission–we're truly jazzed about new-to-the-USA shoe label Portovelo.
The brand makes slip-on sneakers in a handful of classic hues—red, navy, white—that will fit seamlessly into your summertime wardrobe of easy tees and cutoffs. Founder Lavina Tien, a former Google employee and Harvard Business School grad, says her company is largely inspired by her love of travel—by 18, Tien had already visited over 20 countries in all seven continents!
But TSA-friendly as the easy slip-on styles may be, that's not the only travel connection at play here. During visits to developing countries—Nepal, Cambodia, Tanzania—Tien witnessed children suffering from hunger, disease and extreme poverty. So she decided to team up with Flourishing Futures, a nonprofit based in Ulan Bator, Mongolia—and now, every pair of Portovelos purchased provides 15 meals to a child in need.
